Game Recap: Baseball |

Titans split with Saint Vincent

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Graduate student Chase Tomko's (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex) walkoff double in the home half of the 10th helped the Westminster College baseball program salvage a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) split against Saint Vincent College Saturday, falling 6-5 in game one before earning a 4-3 extra innings victory in the nightcap.

Westminster's overall record now stands at 9-11 while its league record is currently 4-2. Saturday's game two win was Westminster fourth extra-innings victory of the year. Saint Vincent is 10-11 overall and 4-2 in PAC.

Game 1
Graduate right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) spun 8.0 strong innings in the no-decision, allowing four runs (3 earned) on nine hits with a walk and five strikeouts. His 237.2 career innings pitched surpassed Hall of Famer Pat Boyle's (2001-04) previous record of 232.0.

Sophomore third baseman Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) tied the game in the sixth with an RBI single to right before Tomko drilled a two-out, run-scoring single to left in the home half of the eighth to give Westminster a 5-4 lead.

Saint Vincent went up 6-5 on Nathan Whiteman's two-out, two-run single in the ninth and Alex Polito retired the final three batters of Westminster's ninth to secure the save for Andrew Root, who picked up the relief win after giving up one run (earned) on two hits in the eighth. It was Polito's second save of the year and Root's second victory. Starter Jeremy Kreuzwieser allowed four runs (4 earned) on seven hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in his 5.2 innings of work.

Tomko went 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Lyons was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Senior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) had a two-run single in the third.

Whiteman, Saint Vincent's leadoff hitter, was 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs. Nolan Hurd and Isiah Petty each had two hits.

Game 2
Saint Vincent, down to its final out, tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the ninth on Lane Golkosky's RBI single. Golkosky entered in the bottom of the seventh as a defensive replacement for pinch hitter Dalton Nicklow. Polito, in the bottom of the ninth, retired the side to take game into extras. After a leadoff walk to graduate second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) and another to senior pinch hitter David Kelly (Gibsonia, Pa., Eden Christian Academy), Tomko delivered his game-winning double.

Senior right-hander Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) made one of his finest starts of the year, allowing two runs (2 earned) on three hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings. He ended up with a no-decision despite leaving the game sporting a 2-1 lead.

Freshman right-hander Nicholas Parrotto (Mars, Pa., Seneca Valley) snagged the relief win, striking out one in the top half of the 10th.

Murgenovich was 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two RBIs and a run scored. It was his sixth multi-hit game this year. The 10th-inning double was Tomko's team-best sixth this season.

Polito suffered the game two loss, giving up a run (earned) on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Starter Tyler Dancu gave up three runs (3 earned) on four hits with five walks and six strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Jacob Auld went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
