Westminster takes two against Franciscan

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Behind a pair of terrific starts from graduate Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) and senior Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln), the Westminster College baseball program opened its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) slate Saturday with a sweep of Franciscan University. The Titans scored four times in the eighth to register a 7-3 win in game one before pounding out a season-high 18 hits on their way to a 15-1, run-rule victory in the nightcap.

Game 1
Banfi, a right-hander, tossed a complete game while the offense struck for four runs in the eighth to pull away. He allowed three runs (3 earned) on nine hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts, improving to 2-0 in his three starts this year. In the bottom of the eighth, senior designated hitter David Kelly (Gibsonia, Pa., Eden Christian Academy) delivered a two-out, RBI single after junior pinch runner Thomas Vo (Valparaiso, Ind., Valparaiso) scored on a Franciscan fielding error. Senior centerfielder Derek Beach (Titusville, Pa., Titusville) singled to right and scored when sophomore third baseman Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) punched a run-scoring single into right center.

Senior leftfielder Chris Davis (San Francisco, Calif., Stuart Hall) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Kelly went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Jeremy Sagun fell to 0-2 for Franciscan, giving up four runs (4 earned) on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 7.2 innings. Anthony Franzonello was 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored.

Game 2
Westminster scored in all six innings to secure the run-rule win. The 15 runs, 18 hits and five extra-base hits were all season highs.

Graduate second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley), senior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) and junior outfielder Andrew Wolf (Dillsburg, Pa., Northern) had three hits apiece. Murgenovich was 3-for-4 and led off the second with a solo home run, his second of the year. He added three runs scored, two RBIs and stolen base. Campbell finished 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored while Wolf was 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, four RBIs and two runs. Kelly had a pair of singles for his eighth multi-hit game this season. He also scored twice.

Gibbons, a right-hander, picked up his first win of the year Saturday, giving up one run (earned) on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Freshman right-hander Nicholas Parrotto (Mars, Pa., Seneca Valley) walked one in hitless seventh inning.

Harold Gildehaus took the loss for Franciscan, allowing five runs (5 earned) on five hits with a walk in two-thirds of an inning. John Fusco went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. John Nemmers was 2-for-3.
