Westminster wins thriller against Muskingum

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's lacrosse program secured an 18-16 victory over Muskingum University Wednesday evening at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Westminster ran its season record to 5-1 and improved to 4-0 at the UPMC Sports Complex. Muskingum has dropped four of its last five, falling to 5-4. 

Westminster finished the first quarter with an 8-5 lead. Junior attack Julia Ravazza (Twain Harte, Calif., Dublin) scored four of her six goals in the first 15 minutes. Muskingum closed out the half scoring five-straight goals. The Muskies' Riley Hudock scoring with less than one second remaining in the half to tie things up at 12-12 going into the break.

With less than a minute-and-a-half left in the third, Megan Lang cut Westminster's lead down to just one, 15-14. Senior midfielder Felicia Young (Darlington, Pa., Blackhawk) and Ravazza scored back-to-back woman-up goals to start the fourth and extend the lead to three, 17-14. With under seven minutes to go, Hudock's sixth goal of the game cut the Titans' lead to two, 17-15. Young fired in her fourth goal of the game with less than six minutes to go to stretch the lead to three, 18-15.   

Ravazza eclipsed the 100 career point mark in the win, finishing with six goals and a pair of assists Wednesday. She had 76 total points (65G, 11A) during her two-year run at New Jersey's Felician University. In her five games with Westminster, Ravazza has registered 27 points (15G, 12A).

Young scored four goals and added three ground balls and three draw controls. Junior midfield Michaela Neelin (Henrietta, N.Y., Rush Henrietta) had three goals and two assists.

Junior defender Morgan Reidy (Elmira, N.Y., Elmira) recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers while junior defender Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y., Sanford H. Calhoun) had three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman midfielder Ava Kessler (White Oak, Pa., Norwin) finished with one goal, one ground ball and career-high 12 draw controls. 

Sophomore Falyn Snyder (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) got the win in net, making 10 saves and picking up six ground balls. 

Hudock led Muskingum with six goals and two assists, upping her season total to 42. She added four ground balls, three caused turnovers and five draw controls. Haley Clifton chipped in with five goals. She was 2-for-2 on free position shots. 

Westminster outshot Muskingum 34-30 while Muskingum had the edge in shots on goal, 26-21. Westminster went 18-of-22 on clears while Muskingum was 18-of-20.

Westminster opens Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play Saturday at Geneva College. The opening draw in Beaver County is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
