Westminster works split at Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio--The Westminster College softball program split with Hiram College Wednesday afternoon at Myrtis E. Herndon Field. The Titans fell in game one, losing 3-2 in eight innings, before bouncing back with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

Westminster is now 8-4 overall. Hiram is 7-5. 

Game 1
Sophomore pinch hitter Riley Salazar (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward) tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, scoring sophomore pinch runner Leah Taliani (Arnold, Pa., Valley). Taliani entered for junior third baseman Jenna Boneysteele (Carnegie, Pa., Chartiers Valley), who led off the inning with a double to right center. In the eighth, with Fayth Kawamura on second, Hannah Marlow dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Kawamura to third. Darian Kanno plated the game-winning run after getting a bunt down that scored Kawamura.

Kanno improved to 6-0 with the win in the circle. she gave up two runs (2 earned) on eight hits with eight strikeouts and three walks the complete-game victory. Danielle Robles went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Megan Moser was 2-for-3. 

Freshman first baseman Lily Jordan (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) was 3-for-4 with a double. It was her fourth three-hit game this season. Junior rightfielder Kelly Troup (Mogadore, Ohio, Field) was 2-for-3. Sophomore Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) fell to 4-1 this year with the loss, allowing three runs (0 earned) on six hits with a strikeout and two walks in the complete game. 

Game 2
Freshman Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) won her third-straight start, allowing two runs (2 earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts in the complete game. The Titans scored twice in the second, with senior third baseman Mia Meholick (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) delivering a two-out, two-run double Troup singled home Meholick. Hiram scratched out a pair of runs in the fifth on RBI base hits by Robles and Kawamura. 

Troup went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman second baseman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) was 2-for-4. Senior centerfielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) was 1-for-2 with a run scored in the second. She also drew a pair of walks. Sophomore shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) went 1-for-2 and walked twice.

Robles, Hiram's leadoff hitter, went 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Kanno was 2-for-2 with a double and was hit by a pitch in the fourth. Sammy Ochoa allowed three runs (3 earned) on nine hits with two strikeouts and five walks in the complete game. 

Up Next:
Westminster opens its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule Friday in New Wilmington against Geneva College. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
