Westminster opens PAC play with sweep of Geneva

Karpa homers twice in nightcap

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program opened its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule Friday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Geneva College. The Titans scored a 5-3 game one victory before holding on for an 11-8 triumph in the nightcap.

Westminster earned it third-straight win Friday, improving to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Geneva had its six-game winning streak snapped, falling to 11-3 overall and 0-2 in the PAC. 

Game 1
Sophomore Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) gave up three runs (2 earned) on seven hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts in the complete-game victory, pushing her season record in the circle to 5-1. She had a two-run single in the bottom of the first that gave Westminster a 2-1 lead. Davis also reached on a throwing error in the third. 

Julia Hart's two-out, two-run home run in the third staked Geneva to a 3-2 lead. Westminster evened things at 3-3 in the bottom of the frame when sophomore shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) scored after her one-out double. Junior rightfielder Kelly Troup's (Mogadore, Ohio, Field) sacrifice fly scored freshman leftfielder Sam Levac (Oakville, Ontario, Garth Webb) in the fourth after her leadoff single to give the Titans a 4-3 lead. Sophomore catcher Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) delivered a two-out RBI single in the fifth. Senior centerfielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) scored on the Jones' base hit after drilling a one-out triple to right. 

Senior designated player Mia Meholick (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic), the Titans' leadoff hitter, went 3-for-4 with a run scored. It was her first three-hit game since Westminster's 10-2, six-inning win at Saint Vincent College on April 13, 2024. Jones was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. 

Sophia Tvaroch took suffered the complete-game loss, allowing five runs (2 earned) on 11 hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Hart was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and run scored. McKenzie Rapp went 2-for-3 with a double. 

Game 2
Karpa highlighted Westminster's nightcap win with her first career two homer game. Her two-out, solo home run in the third evened the game at one apiece while her two-run shot in the fourth extended the Titans' lead to seven, 8-1. Troup scored on Karpa's two-run shot after leading off the inning with a single. 

The Titans piled up a season-high 16 hits in the game two win. Troup was 3-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base. Jones had her second three-hit game of the day, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) was 2-for-4, including a two-run triple in the third. She also scored in the third. Meholick went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base while sophomore designated player Riley Salazar (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward) was 2-for-3 with a double. 

Freshman Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley) ran her record this year to 4-1 after allowing eight runs (8 earned) on eight hits with five walks and six strikeouts in the complete-game win. 

Rapp, Geneva's game two starter, suffered her first loss of the season (6-1), giving up six runs (1 earned) on seven hits with a walk in 3.0 innings. Justine Robbins had a three-run homer in the fifth that cut the Golden Tornadoes' deficit to two, 8-6. she also added an RBI base hit in the seventh.

Westminster will host Penn State Greater Allegheny Monday. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in New Wilmington.
