Westminster edged by Marymount at home

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Despite being held to just four second half goals, the Westminster College men's lacrosse program had a chance to tie the game with under two seconds left but came up short in an 11-10 loss to visiting Marymount University Saturday afternoon at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

The opening faceoff was delayed by more than one hour due to severe storms in the Lawrence County area. 

Marymount, winners of four straight, improved to 5-3. Westminster slipped to 4-3 overall this season. 

Graduate attackman Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) had his second four-goal game of the year. Senior attackman Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) add two goals, two assists and four ground balls while freshman attackman Ethan Kurtz (Hummelstown, Pa., Lower Dauphin) had two goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) fired in his Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) leading 28th goal with 31 seconds left in the first period to give Westminster a 4-3 lead heading into the second. He added three ground balls and a caused turnover. 

Senior long-stick Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah, Wasatch) finished with a goal, an assist, five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. It was his first two-point game of the year. Junior short-stick Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y., Huntington) totaled five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers while graduate defender David Evangelista (Pittsburgh, Pa., Chartiers Valley) posted four ground balls and four caused turnovers. 

Freshman Nolan Grieshaber (Rocklin, Calif., Rocklin) stopped a career-high 15 shots. 

Bryan Maguire led Marymount with six points on three goals and three assists. Cameron Glass won 18 of his 20 attempts at the faceoff X and added 16 ground balls. Jacob Brooks improved to 5-1 after registering 12 saves and four ground balls. 

Sentz's second score of the game pushed Westminster's lead to two, 6-4, with just over eight minutes remaining before halftime. Robert Kirkland IV, Evan Mata and Gavin Taylorson all scored goals in the final five minutes of the quarter, helping the Saints take a 7-6 lead into the break. Marymount stretched its second half lead to three, 9-6, on Santino Rossitto's man-up goal with 13:28 left in the period and went into the fourth up two, 10-8. Setnz's man-up goal with just under four minutes left in regulation cut the deficit to one, 10-9. Mason Vandawater scored his second of the game with just over three minutes to go and pushed the Saints' lead to two, 11-9. Sentz scored his fourth goal of the day with 44 remaining. After calling a timeout with under 10 seconds to go, sophomore midfielder Anthony Trella (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) had a chance just before time expired but went wide. 

Westminster finished 25-of-28 on clears and committed a season-low 14 turnovers. Marymount outshot Westminster 46-36 and finished with a 26-22 edge in shots on goal.
