Westminster falls on walk-off at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C.--Guilford College's Devin Tonkins hit a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth Wednesday afternoon to help the host Quakers secure a 9-8 walkoff win over Westminster College at Edgar H. McBane Field.

Wednesday was Guilford's fourth walk-off win this season. The Quakers are 11-1 overall. Westminster has dropped four straight, falling to 4-6 this season.

Westminster took a 2-0 lead in third on back-to-back run-scoring singles from senior designated hitter David Kelly (Gibsonia, Pa., Eden Christian Academy) and senior left fielder Derek Beach (Titusville, Pa., Titusville). Leading 3-1 after six, the Titans exploded for a five-run seventh, capped by graduate catcher Chase Tomko's (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex) two-run home run to left center. It was his first since delivering a three-run home run in a 9-4 victory over Chatham University on April 29, 2023.

Down 8-1 Guilford used its own five-run seventh to climb to with two, 8-6. The Quakers had six hits in the frame. In the eighth Skyler Dark tripled in Aaron Williams, who led off the inning with a base hit. Ryne Rodrigues worked a two-out, bases-loaded walk to tie the game. Carter Blum led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and came around to score the game-winning run on Tonkins' single.

Kelly finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore third baseman Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester),  freshman first baseman Jack Strausser (Greenville, Pa., Greenville), senior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) and Tomko each had two hits.

Senior right-hander Wyatt Walker (Venetia, Pa., Peters Township) took the loss, giving up one run (unearned) on one hit in 1.0 inning. He walked three and struck out a pair. Sophomore right-hander Jon Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry), Wednesday's starting pitcher, allowed two runs (1 earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts and no walks in 5.0 innings.

Dark finished 3-for-5 with two triples, a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored for Guilford. Tonkins was 3-for-5 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Case Wade snagged the win, his third of the year, throwing 1.1 innings of hitless relief.
