Westminster run rules Saint Mary's, falls to Ursinus

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.--The Westminster College softball program registered its third-straight split Tuesday at THE Spring Games, opening with an 11-1 five-inning, run-rule victory over Saint Mary's College (Ind.) before falling to Ursinus College 6-5. Freshman Lily Jordan's (Rural Valley, Pa., West Shamokin) three-run home run in the fourth inning against Saint Mary's blew the game open. Tuesday was her second-straight day with a three-run homer.

Up Next:
Westminster is off Wednesday. Thursday, it is scheduled to face Russell Sage College at 11:30 a.m. and Carlow University at 1:45 p.m. at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex in Kissimmee, Fla.

Game 1
Westminster scored early and often in Tuesday's opener, taking an 8-0 fourth inning lead on Jordan's home run.

Sophomore Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) improved to 2-1 in the circle with the five-inning win, allowing one run (earned) on three hits with three strikeouts. She also went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jordan went 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored. Senior designated player Mia Meholick (DuBois, Pa., DuBois Central Catholic) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Titans finished with 11 hits and also drew five walks.

Saint Mary's Leah Zimmerman delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth that scored Gia Schiavone, who reached on a fielder's choice. Ashlyn Yeo suffered her first loss of the year after allowing four runs (4 earned) on four hits with four walks in 3.0 innings.

Game 2
Westminster's three-run fifth wasn't enough to overcome Ursinus' 6-0 lead after scoring three in both the first and second innings. The Titans began chipping away at the lead in the third with back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) and Jordan. Freshman Cheyenne Piper (Latrobe, Pa., Ligonier Valley), after allowing back-to-back singles in the top fo the fourth, sat down the next six batters. Karpa's two-run single in the bottom of the fifth cut the lead to 6-4 and she later scored on a two-out wild pitch to make it a one-run game.

Piper was outstanding in relief of sophomore starter Grace Kissick (Portersville, Pa., Laurel), allowing four hits while walking three and fanning 11 in her 5.0 innings. Kissick fell to 1-1 this season after giving up six runs (6 earned) on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 2.0 innings.

Karpa finished 2-for-3 with a sacrifice, three RBIs and a run scored. Jordan has now hit in five-straight games and reached safely in all six. Meholick was 0-for-2 with two walks, a stolen base and a pair of runs scored.

Miranda McIlvaine earned the win for Ursinus, going 4.0 innings and allowing four runs (4 earned) on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Lucy Wolf struck out a pair in the two-inning save.
