Westminster women suffer league loss at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team suffered a 76-61 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss at Waynesburg University Saturday afternoon inside the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. 

Waynesburg improved to 11-10 overall and 6-10 in the conference while Westminster fell to 3-18 overall and 3-13 in league play. 

Freshman forward Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) registered her second 20-point outing in Westminster's last three games. She finished with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting, going 3-of-8 from three-point range, and added four rebounds. Sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) scored 11 points to go along with six rebounds while freshman guard Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) added nine points on 3-of-10 three-point shooting. Senior forward Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) totaled five points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Mia Henkins led Waynesburg with 15 points. Clara-Paige Miller and Madisen Dayton each finished with 13. 

Waynesburg, up 13-10 after a quarter, pushed its second quarter lead to seven, 25-18, on a Miller three-pointer with just over a minute to go. Dayton's layup with 22 seconds remaining gave the Yellow Jackets a nine-point edge, 27-18, heading into halftime. Westminster committed nine first half turnovers and went 0-of-10 from the three-point line in the opening half. 

Maryo scored her first points of the game on a made three with just over a minute gone in the third that cut Waynesburg's lead to 10, 31-21. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Titans 29-20 in the quarter and led by 18, 56-38, heading into the fourth. Maryo knocked down three three-pointers in the third. Waynesburg didn't allow its fourth quarter lead to dip under 14, eventually securing the 15-point win.

Westminster finished shooting 35.9 percent (23-64) from the floor. After their 0-of-10 start from three-point range, the Titans went 8-of-18 in the second half. Westminster was outrebounded 50-41, including a 16-8 margin on the offensive glass.
