Westminster falls on the road to Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program fell to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Saint Vincent College, 63-56, Wednesday evening inside the Robert S. Carey Student Center.

Saint Vincent, winners of four straight, improved to 12-8 overall and 11-4 in the league. Westminster's overall record fell to 3-17 and 3-12 in the PAC. 

Freshman forward Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) led Westminster with 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting. She added three rebounds, three blocks and went a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Freshman guard Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) added 15 points, making 4-of-11 three-point field goal tries while sophomore guard Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) added 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting to go along with three rebounds and three assists. She drilled four three-pointers for the second time this season (Jan. 8 vs. Allegheny). Senior forward Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) finished with 10 rebounds, her fourth game of the year with 10 or more boards in a game. 

Reese Gadsby had a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double for Saint Vincent, while Emily Thompson added 15 points and four boards. 

Westminster led 17-6 after a quarter, limiting Saint Vincent to just 13.3 percent shooting in the opening period. Syka scored eight and Arison went 2-of-2 from three-point range in the first. With Westminster leading by 13, 24-11, Saint Vincent ripped off nine-straight points to cut the Titans' lead to four, 24-20, with 2:40 left in the half. A Syka layup and three-pointer from Maryo sent Westminster into the break up six, 29-23. Syka had 12 first half points, while Arison knocked down four of her seven attempted three-pointers. 

Saint Vincent's 13-3 run to start the third quarter led to its four-point lead, 36-32, with just over five minutes remaining in the period. Saint Vincent put together another 7-0 scoring spurt late and went into the fourth leading by six, 43-37. The Titans were outscored 20-8 in the third. Makenna Maier's three-point play with 2:17 left extended the Bearcats' lead to 10, 58-48. Syka cut the lead down to five, 58-53, after converting four-straight made free throws with just over a minute remaining, but Saint Vincent went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the seven-point league win. 

Westminster finished shooting 32.7 percent (17-52) from the field and 43.5 percent (10-23) from beyond the three-point line. The Titans combined to go 12-of-14 (.857) from the free throw line. Saint Vincent had a 45-34 rebounding edge, including a 13-5 advantage on the offensive glass.
