Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Titans ride strong first half to league win at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball team raced out to a 19-point halftime lead and held on for an 84-74 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Saint Vincent College Wednesday night inside the Robert S. Carey Student Center.

Wednesday's wire-to-wire win was Westminster's first road triumph of the year. The Titans upped their overall record to 6-14 and improved to 3-12 in the league. Saint Vincent, which entered the matchup as winners of four straight, fell to 15-5 overall and 11-4 in the PAC.

Junior guard Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) led four players in double figures, finishing with 19 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) scored 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including a 3-of-7 night from three-point field goal range. Junior guard Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) totaled 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists while junior forward Alex Rothwell (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) registered his first career double-double, finishing with 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

Terek Crosby led Saint Vincent with 15 points and seven rebounds.

With 29 seconds left in the first, Hendershott buried his second three-pointer of the half to stretch the lead to 21, 47-26. Westminster went into the locker room up 19, 47-28, after shooting 51.7 percent (15-29) from the floor. The Titans went to the free throw line 21 times in the first 20 minutes, making 14 (.667). The 47 first half points tied Westminster's most productive opening half of the season (47 in 94-83 win over Penn State DuBois on Nov. 13). Weir scored 10 of his game-high 19 in the first. Sophomore guard Skevos Kouros (Youngstown, Ohio, Campbell) provided some first half firepower for the Titans with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting.

Westminster's second half lead didn't dip below double digits until Jevontae Jones hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to nine, 78-69, with just under two minutes remaining. Sophomore guard Justin Wypasek (Strongsville, Ohio, Strongsville) delivered the knockout after drilling a three-pointer with 19 seconds left. It was just his fourth made three of the season and first since a Jan. 18 game against Allegheny College. Wypasek finished with nine points and four boards.

Westminster finished shooting 42.6 percent (26-61) from the floor and went a combined 27-of-39 (.692) from the charity stripe. The 27 made, and 39 attempted, free throws were both season highs. The Titans posted a season-high 48 rebounds in the win, including a season-best 17 offensive boards.
