Women's lacrosse opens season with win over Marietta

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's lacrosse program had six players score in an 11-8 season-opening win over visiting Marietta College Saturday afternoon at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Westminster snapped a five-year losing streak in openers Saturday, having last won a season lidlifter on Feb. 16, 2016, a 19-8 victory at the University of Dallas. It was also Westminster's first win against Marietta in four tries.
Marietta fell to 0-2 with the loss.

Senior midfield Felicia Young (Darlington, Pa., Blackhawk) and junior attack Julia Ravazza (Twain Harte, Calif., Dublin) each had three goals in their Westminster debuts. Young added two draw controls and Ravazza added two assists, two ground balls, one caused turnover and one draw control. Freshman midfield Allyssa Anstis (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) finished with two goals and four draw controls in her collegiate debut.

Junior defense Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y., Sanford H. Calhoun) had six caused turnovers and two ground balls. Sophomore defense Emma Baldwin (Seven Fields, Pa., North Catholic) finished with five ground balls and one caused turnover. Freshman midfield Ava Kessler (White Oak, Pa., Norwin) had one goal, one assist, four ground balls, three caused turnovers and five draw controls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Falyn Snyder (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) stopped 12 shots Saturday, matching her career high. She had 12 against West Virginia Wesleyan College last March.

Young and Ravazza had two goals each in the first half, helping Westminster forge a 4-3 halftime lead.

Tied 7-7 after three quarters, a four-goal flurry pushed Westminster ahead for good. Anstis, Young and junior Chloe Courinos (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) opened up the fourth by ripping off three-straight unassisted goals. Junior midfield Michaela Neelin (Henrietta, N.Y., Rush Henrietta) netted a woman-up goal with under five minutes to play on a Ravazza assist to close out Westminster's scoring.

Westminster outshot Marietta 31-29 and each team had 20 shots on goal. Westminster went 25-of-28 on clears and was 4-of-9 on free position shots. Westminster finished with a 12-11 advantage on draw controls.
