Westminster opens season with victory at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio--The Westminster College men's lacrosse program opened its 2025 season with an 18-16 victory over Wittenberg University Friday night inside The Steemer.

Friday was the opener for both schools. Last April, Westminster closed out its regular season with a 19-8 home loss to Wittenberg.

Westminster had seven different goal scorers Friday, led by senior midfield Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman), who finished with five goals and two assists. He added three ground balls and a caused turnover. Freshman attack Ethan Kurtz (Hummelstown, Pa., Lower Dauphin) had four goals, one assist and two ground balls while senior attack Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) scored three times. Senior midfield Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) and freshman midfield Paul DiPasquale (Woodbine, Md., Glenelg) each had multi-goal games, scoring two goals apiece.

Junior short-stick defensive midfield Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y., Huntington) and senior long-stick midfield Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah, Wasatch) had four ground balls each. Hawkins added four caused turnovers and McGuinness added two. Freshman goalkeeper Nolan Grieshaber (Rocklin, Calif., Rocklin) got the win in net, totaling 10 saves.

For Wittenberg, Nicholas Langenderfer finished with five goals and Dillon McKeigue finished with four goals and six assists.

Clark scored the game's first goal off a Sentz assist two minutes into the first quarter. Wittenberg answered less than a minute later. Westminster went on to score seven-straight goals to close out the quarter. Kurtz scored twice, Clark scored another and Sentz, sophomore midfield Anthony Trella (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon), DiPasquale and Jones each had one to end the first.

Jones scored a man-up goal off a Trella assist 34 seconds into the second quarter that gave Westminster a 9-1 lead. After Wittenberg scored three-and-a-half minutes into the quarter, Jones fired in another man-up goal. With just under six minutes left in the first half, DiPasquale scored his second of the night. Wittenberg rattled off five-straight scores to pull to within four, 11-7, before Sentz's man-up goal with 44 seconds left allowed the Titans to head into the half leading 12-7.

One minute into the second half, Kurtz scored off a Trella assist and junior attack Brady Page (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) scored 55 seconds later. After Wittenberg's two goals, Kurtz and Jones each scored unassisted goals. Wittenberg ended the third with goals by Nicholas Langenderfe and McKeigue to pull to within four, 16-12, going into the fourth quarter.

Wittenberg scored two goals seven minutes into the fourth quarter to cut the lead to two, 16-14, before back-to-back goals by Jones and Clark stretched Westminster's lead to four, 18-14. Nathan Brown scored with just over four minutes to play and Langenderfe's fifth of the game came with under four minutes to go.

Wittenberg outshot Westminster 43-34 and had the edge in shots on goal (26-24). Westminster went 25-of-28 on clears and Wittenberg was 14-of-18.
