Hergenrother, Weir each score 17 in second half to fuel comeback win at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa.--Westminster College junior guards Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) and Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) scored 17 second half points apiece to lead the Westminster College men's basketball program to an 81-71 come-from-behind Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Allegheny College Wednesday night at the David V. Wise Center. 

Westminster improved to 8-16 overall and 5-14 in the PAC while Allegheny fell to 8-16 overall and 6-13 in league action. The Gators scored a 74-69 win in New Wilmington on Jan. 8. Westminster has won four of its last six matchups with Allegheny. 

Hergenrother finished 6-of-13 from the floor and was 2-of-6 from three-point field goal range. He added four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Hergenrother was 0-of-5 from the field in the first. Weir went 6-of-12 from the floor and knocked down five of six attempted free throws. He chipped in with seven rebounds and two assists. In the first half Weir was 0-of-4 from the field. 

Junior Alex Rothwell (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) finished with 11 points and seven boards. He was 5-of-6 from the floor. Sophomore guard Skevos Kouros (Youngstown, Ohio, Campbell) added six points and six rebounds. 

Luke Barker led Allegheny with 23 points. Isaiah Portis finished with 18 points while Ryan Lang added a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double. 

Allegheny jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and went up 16, 27-11, with just under nine minutes left in the first. A 13-0 run chiseled the Gators' lead down to three, 27-24, with just under three to go before the half. Freshman forward Michael Burbach (West Farmington, Ohio, Bristol) had seven during the Titans' run. The Gators went into halftime up five, 36-31. Allegheny went 9-of-18 from three-point range in the first and shot 50 percent (12-24) from the field. Portis fired in 18 first half points on 6-of-8 shooting, including a 5-of-7 clip from three-point range. Burbach scored all nine of his points Wednesday in the first half. 

Barker hit a three-pointer with seven-and-a-half minutes to go in the second, evening the score at 59-59 before the Titans strung together a 10-2 run to go up seven, 69-62, with 4:40 left. Hergenrother had eight of the 10 during the spurt. Hergenrother and Weir each knocked down a pair of free throws to push the lead to eight, 75-67, with just over a minute left in regulation before Weir scored on a pair of layups with less than a minute left to push the lead to double figures.

The bench was pivotal in Wednesday's road win, with the reserves outscoring their counterparts 24-3 in the first half. The Titans finished shooting 45.1 percent (32-71) from the floor and went 11-of-15 (.733) from the charity stripe. Westminster also had a 37-34 edge on the glass and committed a season-low six turnovers.

Westminster will close out the season Saturday at Chatham University. Tipoff inside the Athletic and Fitness Center (AFC) is scheduled for 2 p.m.
