Westminster suffers home loss to Franciscan

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball program suffered a 66-63 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to Franciscan University Saturday afternoon on Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Franciscan improved its record to 14-9 overall and 9-9 in conference play. Westminster fell to 7-16 overall and 4-14 in the PAC. The Titans are 0-8 this season in games decided by five points or less.

Four from Westminster finished in double figures. Junior guard Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) totaled 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals while junior center Alex Rothwell (New Middletown, Ohio, Springfield Local) scored 13 points and added eight rebounds. He went 4-of-5 from the floor and was 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Junior guard Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) made all five of his attempted field goals and finished with 12 points and four boards. Freshman guard Trevor Siefke (Lisbon, Ohio, David Anderson) had 11 points, going 3-of-5 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.

Sawyer Butler led Franciscan with 26 points, going 8-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-9 from three-point range. Travis Zimmerman had 13 points and nine rebounds while Josh Zimmerman chipped in with 11.

Franciscan stormed out to a 7-0 lead just over two minutes into the first, with Butler scoring five of the Barons' first seven. Up eight, 27-19, with just over five minutes left in the opening half, Franciscan went into the break leading by five, 30-25. Butler scored 14 of his 26 in the first half. Weir had 10 first half points to lead Westminster. The Titans shot just 32.3 percent (10-31) in the first and went 1-of-8 (.125) from three-point range.

A Rothwell layup with just over 15 minutes to go capped a 10-3 run and pushed Westminster in front by three, 36-33. Karl Yonkeu split a pair of free throws with 7:35 remaining to stretch the Barons' lead to nine, 54-45. Westminster managed to cut the deficit to just two on Hergenrother's second chance jumper, 65-63, with 16 seconds to go. Josh Zimmerman split a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left to go up three, 66-63, before a pair of good three-point looks didn't go for Westminster. Junior guard Jaxon Hendershott's (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) attempt caught the front of the rim before freshman guard Julian Vizzoca's (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) three banged off the back of the rim.

Westminster shot 42.6 percent (23-54) from the floor and finished 14-of-16 (.875) from the free throw line. The Titans hit just three of their 16 attempted three-pointers Saturday (.188). The Titans outscored the Barons in the paint, 40-32.
