McClain 5th in 500 at Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio--Junior Maddy McClain (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward) finished fifth in the championship final of the 500 Thursday night at the Wooster Invitational. 

The three-day event is being held inside the YMCA of Wooster's Chris Mathew Aquatics Center. Diving events on Friday and Saturday will be contested at Wooster's Timken Natatorium. 

Through five scored events, Wooster leads the 10-team field with 411 points. Westminster is currently in eighth place with 174 points.

The Titans' 200 free 'A' relay opened the evening session Thursday with an 11th-place finish, registering a time of 1 minute, 44.07 seconds. Members of the relay were freshmen Nina Nappo (Columbiana, Ohio, Columbiana)Brianna Reinhart (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny)Madison Alessio (Elizabeth, Pa., Elizabeth Forward) and Rachel Rospierski (Erie, Pa., Fairview). The 'B' relay, composed of sophomore Isabella Summers (Hubbard, Ohio, Hubbard), freshman Sophia Greene (Cabot, Pa., Knoch), sophomore Avery O'Sullivan (Washington, Pa., Trinity) and sophomore Daphne Gindlesperger (McKean, Pa., General McLane), was 17th (1:54.90). 

McClain swam to a fifth-place finish in the 500 with a time of 5:18.06, shaving over five seconds off her time in the preliminaries (2:23.15). Junior Annabelle Turner (Butler, Pa., Butler) competed in the 'C' final of the 500, finishing 24th overall and eighth in the event's opening heat (5:46.28). 

Reinhart and Nappo competed in the 'B' final of the 200 IM. Reinhart finished 13th overall and fifth in the second heat (2:22.25) while Nappo was 15th overall and seventh in the heat (2:23.71). O'Sullivan was 23rd overall and seventh in the opening heat (2:30.52) of the event.

Rospierski posted an 11th-place finish in the 50 free, finishing third in the 'B' final of the event (25.22). 

Westminster's 400 medley 'A' relay, made up of Rospierski, Reinhart, McClain and Gindlesperger, finished the opening night 13th (4:27.47). The 400 medley 'B' relay was 14th (4:40.47). The 'B' relay members were freshman Olivia Schrock (Greensburg, Pa., Hempfield), Alessio, Turner and freshman Emma Greene (Darlington, Pa., Blackhawk).

Up next:
Friday's preliminary events are scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m., with women's 1-meter diving scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The finals will commence at 6 p.m.
