Westminster men lose at Allegheny in PAC opener

MEADVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball program was dealt a 66-54 loss at Allegheny in its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener Wednesday night inside the David V. Wise Center. 

Westminster (3-3, 0-1) had three players reach double figures. Senior Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Senior Trey DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) totaled 12 points, seven boards and four blocked shots while graduate student DJ Harrell (Cleveland, Ohio, East Technical) added 11 points and three rebounds. 

Ryan Lang registered 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Allegheny (2-3, 1-0). Jayson Perry and Pijus Latauskas finished with 14 points apiece. Perry netted 12 of his 14 in the second half. 

Westminster closed out the first half on a 7-0 run and held Allegheny scoreless over the final 5:08 to cut the Gators' lead to five, 33-28, heading into the break. Weir had nine points and four rebounds in the opening half. The Titans were just 2-of-15 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes. 

The Titans came out firing in the second, fueled by a 10-0 run that tied the game at 38-all with 16:18 remaining. Weir and DePietro had four each during the spurt. Junior Skevos Kouros (Youngstown, Ohio, Campbell) scored on a fast break with just over 13 minutes to go to trim Allegheny's lead to one, 41-40, before the Gators put together an 11-2 run to stretch their lead to 10, 52-42. Senior Jaxon Hendershott's (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) three-pointer cut the lead to four, 56-52, with just over five-and-a-half minutes left, but Allegheny outscored Westminster 10-2 over the final 4:24 to secure the 12-point win. 

Westminster shot 37.1 percent (23-62) from the field, going 4-of-25 (.160) from beyond the three-point line. Allegheny hit at a 50.0 percent (29-58) clip and finished with a 39-29 edge on the boards. 

Up next:
Westminster will open its PAC home schedule Saturday against Thiel (4-4, 1-0), a 61-58 winner over Hiram Wednesday. Tipoff from Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium is scheduled for 3 p.m.
