Westminster falls at Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y.--The Westminster College women's basketball team suffered a 66-45 loss to Nazareth at the Sandy DeWolf McCormack Holiday Tournament Saturday afternoon. 

Junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) was Westminster's lone player to reach double figures. She finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Bella Calcamuggio (Sylvania, Ohio, Notre Dame) added eight points and three rebounds. Sophomore Katie Grexa (Hartford, Ohio, Badger) totaled six points and five rebounds. 

Molly Benetti paced Nazareth (5-2) with 16 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots. Morgan Caraballo added 10 points. 

Westminster (3-5) led by three, 16-13, after the opening period, paced by Grexa's six first quarter points. The Titans rallied from a five-point deficit, 24-19, with just over three minutes to go in the first half, countering with a 5-0 run to even the score at 24-all heading into halftime. Westminster went 7-of-8 from the free throw line and had a 31-22 rebounding edge in the first half. Calcamuggio scored six second quarter points. 

Nazareth, fueled by an 8-0 scoring run, went up by seven, 36-29, with just over three minutes left in the third and carried a 38-34 lead into the fourth. The Golden Flyers scored five-straight points to open the fourth to go up nine, 43-34, and outscored the Titans 14-4 through the first five minutes of the period. 

Westminster shot 28.3 percent (17-60) from the floor and went 3-of-19 (.158) from three-point range. The Titans combined to shoot 66.7 percent (8-12) from the free throw line. Nazareth finished with a 46-44 advantage on the boards. 

Up next:
Westminster will face the loser of Saturday night's game between Piedmont and the State University of New York (SUNY) at Potsdam in the consolation game Sunday at 1 p.m.
