Westminster holds on for 57-56 win over Kalamazoo

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind.--Junior Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) and sophomore Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) knocked down back-to-back three-pointers early in the fourth quarter before freshman Bella Calcamuggio (Sylvania, Ohio, Notre Dame) hit a pair of key free throws down the stretch to help the Westminster College women's basketball program earn a 57-56 victory over Kalamazoo in the consolation game of the Teammates for Life Tip-Off Tournament Sunday afternoon at Manchester. 

Three finished in double figures for Westminster. Junior Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) fired in a game-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds. Arison had 13 points, seven assists and six boards while Maryo posted a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double. It was the first of her career. Arison (3-5) and Maryo (4-9) went a combined 7-for-14 from behind the three-point line. Freshman Jenna Zuelch (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) added eight points in 11 reserve minutes. She was 4-for-4 from the free throw line, hitting a pair to end the second and third quarters, respectively. 

Down five, 39-34, at the half, Westminster cut Kalamazoo's lead down to two, 47-45, at the end of the third. Arison made a three 56 seconds into the fourth before Maryo's three gave the Titans a two-point edge, 51-49, with 8:30 to play. Sophia Moir's turnaround jumper with 24 seconds left trimmed Westminster's lead to one, 55-54, before Calcamuggio's two made free throws extended the lead to three, 57-53, with seven seconds to go. Semaj' Robertson made a layup as time expired for Kalamazoo. 

Lauren Vanderstelt finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for Kalamazoo. 

Westminster outrebounded Kalamazoo, 48-42, and cleaned up on the offensive glass, pulling down 17 for 11 second chance points. 

Up next:
Westminster (1-1) will participate in Washington & Jefferson's Hampton Inn by Hilton Tip-Off Tournament next weekend. The Titans will play Mount Union Friday at 6 p.m. and Ohio Northern Saturday at 2 p.m.
