Titans post Senior Recognition Day triumph over Hiram

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College football program raced out to a 34-0 first quarter lead over visiting Hiram and never looked back Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium, posting a 76-0 Senior Recognition Day win. The point total tied the existing program record, which was set in a 76-0 win on Sept. 10, 1904 against Branch Rickey led Allegheny.

Saturday was Westminster's second shutout of the year. The Titan defense allowed just 147 yards of total offense while racking up 7.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks, forcing three fumbles and snagging a pair of interceptions. Hiram had three of its 14 drives finish in Westminster territory. All three were snuffed out on downs. The Titans scored 34 points off turnovers.

Senior Dylan Sleva (McDonald, Pa., Moon) totaled eight tackles (4 solo) and a half-sack. Freshman Tyree Mitchell (Youngstown, Ohio, Austintown Fitch) made a career-high four stops (3 solo) with a tackle for loss.

Senior Jack Bible (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) finished with three tackles (2 solo) and a pair of fumble recoveries, returning one seven yards for a touchdown with five-and-a-half minutes left in the first. Sophomore Lamont Austin (Sharon, Pa., Sharon) registered three tackles (3 solo) and returned a second quarter interception 25 yards for a touchdown. It was his fourth interception this season and second returned for a score. Senior RJ Scott (Frederick, Md., Frederick) chipped in with a pair of tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Senior Mason Manos (New Castle, Pa., Neshannock) had two tackles (1 solo), a sack and a forced fumble. Junior Dante Currie (Sharon, Pa., Sharon) had three tackles (3 solo) and forced a fumble.

Six different offensive players scored touchdowns Saturday. Westminster scored on all seven of its red zone chances.

Westminster finished with seven rushing scores. Junior Clayton Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Marjory Stoneman Douglas) ran 10 times for 69 yards and had three rushing touchdowns. It was the first three rushing touchdown game for Westminster since Ryan Gomes scored three times in a 41-6 win over Thiel on Oct. 15, 2022. Senior Demere White (Manalapan, N.J., DePaul Catholic) ran for a pair of scores, finishing with seven carries for 28 yards. Freshman Jaxon Covell (Titusville, Pa., Titusville) scored a touchdown for the second-straight week while sophomore Mitchell Tingley (Stoneboro, Pa., Lakeview) two-yard score with seven-and-a-half minutes to go was the first of his career.
