Westminster wins in straight sets against Grove City

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College's Tammy Swearingen picked up her 700th career victory in a straight-set win over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City Wednesday evening on Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Swearingen, in her 33rd year leading the women's volleyball program, is the eighth active Division III coach, and 27th in Division III history, to reach 700 career wins.

Westminster upped its overall record to 12-7 and improved to 4-3 in conference action with Tuesday's victory, winning 25-19, 25-22 and 25-21. It was the Titans' eighth sweep this season.

Senior Rachel LaSalvia (Columbus, Pa., Corry) paced Westminster offensively, finishing with nine kills. Junior Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) added eight kills, 12 digs and a pair of service aces while senior Charlotte Burgan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) had seven kills and five blocks. Sophomore Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) finished with five kills, 17 assists, 10 digs and two aces. Senior Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) had a 16-assist, 10-dig double-double, her second of the year. Junior Meredith Hart (New Waterford, Ohio, Crestview) totaled a career-high 21 digs.

Sarah Hart led Grove City (10-5, 3-4 PAC) with a match-high 10 kills. Lilly Wojtala had 20 digs while Kendra Klusch registered seven blocks.

The Titans raced out to a 12-8 lead in the first before stretching their lead to seven, 23-16, on kills from LaSalvia and Trent. Burgan had four of her seven kills in the opening set. Down 14-8 in the second, Westminster managed to whittle Grove City's lead to three, 19-16, before a 6-0 run saw the Titans go up three, 22-19. LaSalvia had five kills and hit .333 in the set. Even at 15-all in the third, a 5-0 run gave the Titans a 20-15 lead. Senior Jamie Robertson's (Los Angeles, Calif., Palisades Charter) service ace ended the match.
