Westminster loses at W&J, 24-7

WASHINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College football team suffered a 24-7 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon at Cameron Stadium. 

Westminster and W&J entered Saturday's matchup as the only programs in the league with 2-0 conference records. Westminster fell to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the PAC while W&J, winners of three straight, improved to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in conference action. 

W&J's Kellan Stahl connected with John Peduzzi for a 13-yard touchdown with just over five minutes left in the first quarter before Deven Wyandt booted a 23-yard field goal with 10 minutes to go in the second to push the Presidents' lead to 10-0. Stahl scored on a 2-yard run with under three to go in the half to push W&J's lead to 17-0. 

W&J outgained Westminster 266-75 in the opening half and had a 14-4 advantage in first downs. 

After a scoreless third freshmen Quentin Goode (Aliquippa, Pa., Aliquippa) and Kristian Bailey (Hollywood, Fla., Hollywood Hills) hooked up on a 14-yard scoring strike with just over seven minutes to go in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 10, 17-7. It was the first touchdown pass for Goode and first touchdown catch for Bailey. Goode finished 8-of-15 passing for 108 yards and a touchdown in relief of senior Ty McGowan (Moon Township, Pa., Moon), who was 8-of-17 for 61 yards before exiting. 

On the ensuing drive, W&J's Andrew Sharp scored from three yards out to push stretch the Presidents' lead to 24-7. 

Junior Clayton Cannon (Parkland, Fla., Marjory Stoneman Douglas) rushed 16 times for 47 yards. Bailey finished with five catches for 44 yards and a score while senior Taite Beachy (Moon Township, Pa., Moon) hauled in three catches for 45 yards. 

The Westminster defense finished with 7.0 tackles for loss. Senior Dylan Sleva (McDonald, Pa., Moon) made nine stops (6 solo) while sophomore Ricky Cooper (Port St. Lucie, Fla., Port St. Lucie) had eight (6 solo). Senior Jack Bible (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) registered a career-high seven tackles (2 solo) and added 1.5 tackles for loss. Senior Jean Garry Joseph (North Miami, Fla., Ebenezer Christian) and sophomore AJ Byrd (Youngstown, Ohio, Austintown Fitch) each had a sack. Freshman Devin Mila (Davie, Fla., University School) cut W&J's opening drive short with a diving interception at Westminster's 14-yard line. A starter in all five games this season, it was the first interception of his career.

Next week Westminster hosts Homecoming and Reunion Weekend. Saturday, the Titans will welcome Thiel (0-5, 0-3 PAC) to Memorial Field inside Harold Burry Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
