Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Titans' rally falls short in five-point loss to Allegheny

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Junior guard Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) poured in a career-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting for the Westminster College men's basketball program in a 74-69 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) loss to Allegheny College Wednesday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Allegheny ran its overall record to 5-8 and improved to 3-5 in the PAC. Westminster fell to 3-9 overall and 0-7 in the league.

Hergenrother was one of three Westminster players to post double figures. He added six rebounds, five assists and a pair of steals. Junior guard Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) had 12 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots while junior guard Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) totaled 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting, going 3-of-9 from three-point field goal range. It was his sixth game this season knocking down at least three three-pointers.

Luke Barker led four Allegheny scorers in double figures, tying his season high with 33 points. He went 10-of-16 from the field and drilled five of his eight attempted three-pointers. James Sitter added 12 points and seven boards while Isaiah Portis posted a 10-point, 14-rebound double-double. Ryan Lang chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds.

Down by four, 10-6, early in the first, Allegheny outscored Westminster 11-0 midway through the half to go up seven, 17-10, with 10:22 left before the break. Barker had eight points during the spurt. Hergenrother's layup with 27 seconds left in the first trimmed the deficit to two, 28-26, going into halftime. Westminster outscored Allegheny 14-7 over the final five-plus minutes of the opening half. Barker scored 17 of his 33 in the first. Hergenrother and sophomore guard Justin Wypasek (Strongsville, Ohio, Strongsville) had seven first half points each for Westminster.

Weir's layup with three-and-a-half minutes to go in the second capped a 13-3 run that led to a one-point advantage, 62-61, for the Titans. It was their only lead of the half. Tied 64-64, an 8-1 Gators' run pushed their lead back to seven, 72-65, with under a half-minute left. Sitter scored five of Allegheny's eight during the stretch. Lang went 2-of-4 from the free throw line down the stretch to secure the Gators' five-point win.

Westminster shot 37.7 percent (26-69) from the floor and connected on nine of its season-high 33 attempted three-pointers (.273). The Titans' bench outscored the Gators' reserves 12-0. Westminster committed a season-low seven turnovers Wednesday.
