Syka, Cano clutch in win over Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Freshman forward Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) and sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) both had career nights for the Westminster College women's basketball program in Wednesday's 83-58 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Thiel College at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster snapped a five-game losing streak Wednesday and improved to 3-16 overall and 3-11 in the league. The 83 points were a season high. Thiel fell to 0-19 overall and 0-14 in the PAC. 

Syka led four Westminster players in double figures, finishing with a career-high 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting. She added seven rebounds and three steals. Cano posted a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double, her second of the season. She finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds in a win at Thiel on Dec. 14. Cano's 12 boards were a career high. She finished 8-of-15 from the floor. Senior forward Emily Hess (Edinboro, Pa., General McLane) was 4-of-7 from the floor and finished with 13 points. She added seven rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) had 11 points and four rebounds. Wednesday was her 11th game this year with three or more made three-pointers.

Sophomore guard Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban) totaled nine points, two rebounds and a career-high nine assists. 

Jensen Stehlik led Thiel with 15 points. Issy Green added 13 points, five rebounds and six assists.  

Thiel's first quarter lead grew to many as 12, 25-13, before heading into the second up nine, 28-19. Stehlik led the Tomcats in the first with 12. It was Thiel's first first quarter lead since Dec. 7 at Franciscan University (16-10). Thiel made six of its eight three-point field goal attempts in the opening quarter. Syka scored nine during a 13-0 second quarter spurt and the Titans went into the break up leading by four, 42-28. Skya scored 11 of her 23 in the second. 

Westminster rode a 28-9 third quarter to a 70-47 lead going into the fourth. Arison drilled all three of her attempted three-pointers in the quarter while Syka added seven. The Titans went up by as many as 26, 79-53, with just over four minutes left in the game.

Westminster shot 47.7 percent (31-65) from the field and buried a season-high 11 three-pointers, its most since hitting 12 in a win over Thiel on Feb. 18, 2023 in New Wilmington. The Titans outrebounded the Tomcats 51-33 and had a 13-11 edge on the offensive glass.

Following Saturday's bye, Westminster will travel to Latrobe, Pa. next Wednesday, Feb. 5 to take on Saint Vincent College. Tipoff from inside the Robert S. Carey Student Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
