Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Weir drops career-high 33 in win over Thiel

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Junior guard Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) fired in a career-high 33 points to help lift the Westminster College men's basketball program to a 78-71 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over visiting Thiel College Wednesday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Weir finished 12-of-22 from the floor and made four of his six attempted three-point field goals. He was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Wednesday was Weir's second 30-point game this season. His 16.4 points-per-game scoring average currently ranks fifth in the PAC. Weir also had six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

Junior guard Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) added 21 points after going 8-of-12 from the field, including shooting at a 5-of-9 clip from three-point range. He's made five or more three-pointers four times this season. Wednesday was also Hendershott's fourth time this year scoring 20 or more points. He ranks No. 2 in the PAC in three-point field goal percentage (.412) and three-point field goals made per game (2.7). Junior guard Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists. He went 8-of-8 from the free throw line.

Westminster had dropped three straight before Wednesday's win. The Titans are now 5-13 overall and 2-11 in the league. Wednesday was Thiel's third-straight loss, falling to 6-12 overall and 5-9 in the PAC. Thiel came into Wednesday's matchup as winners of four of the last five against Westminster.

Marlon Ellerbee led Thiel with 19 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Mike Brown and Khamari Accursio-Harris had 15 apiece.

Accursio-Harris' stepback jumper cut the Titans' lead to two, 26-24, with just over three minutes to go before a 10-0 scoring run helped Westminster surge ahead by 12, 36-24, with 20 seconds left in the half. Weir had seven points during the spurt. Logan Lentz's tipin as time expired trimmed the Titans' lead to 10, 36-26, heading into the break.

Thiel got things going early in the second with a 14-3 scoring run, grabbing a one-point lead, 40-39, on Ellerbee's layup just under three minutes into the half. With just over three minutes to go, Brown drilled a three-pointer to cut Westminster's lead to one, 65-64, before an 8-0 spurt, capped by a pair of made Hergenrother free throws, stretched the Titans' lead to nine, 73-64, with under a minute to go. Hergenrother connected on four free throws down the stretch to seal Westminster's seven-point win.

Westminster shot 44.1 percent (26-59) from the floor and went 9-of-20 (.450) from three-point range. It was the Titans' fourth game of the year connecting on nine three-pointers in a game. Thiel outrebounded Westminster 45-37 and had a commanding 17-8 edge on the offensive glass.
