Westminster women suffer league loss to W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball team dropped an 85-55 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) decision to visiting Washington & Jefferson College Saturday afternoon at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

W&J improved to 15-3 overall and 12-1 in the league. Westminster fell to 2-16 overall and 2-11 in the PAC.

Sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) finished with 15 points and five rebounds for Westminster. She was 7-of-11 from the floor. Freshman forward Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) added 12 points and six rebounds. 

W&J had five players finish in double figures, led by Stellanie Loutsion's 16 points. She had 14 in the opening quarter on 6-of-6 shooting. 

Down 10, 25-15, after one quarter, Westminster's deficit swelled to as many as 15, 41-26, with less than two minutes remaining in the half. Freshman guard Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) drilled a three-pointer with 32 seconds left to cut W&J's lead to nine, 41-32, going into the break. The Presidents, fueled by a 16-2 scoring run to begin the third, ran its lead to 23, 59-36, five minutes into the quarter. W&J closed out the period outscoring Westminster 12-1 and led 71-39 going into the fourth.

W&J shot 48.5 percent (33-68) from the field and outrebounded Westminster 41-32. The Presidents had a season-low nine turnovers Saturday. Westminster shot 37.7 percent (20-53) from the floor.
