Women's basketball downed at home

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's basketball program suffered a 73-48 defeat by visiting Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Bethany College Wednesday night at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Bethany improved to 8-7 overall and 5-5 in the league. Westminster fell to 2-13 overall and 2-8 in the PAC.

Freshman guard Katie Maryo (Cleveland, Ohio, Magnificat) led Westminster with 15 points, making five of 11 attempted three-point field goal attempts. She has knocked down at least five three-pointers in five games this season, including four of her last five. Sophomore forward Grace Cano (Greenville, Pa., Greenville) added 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting to go along with four rebounds. Four players scored five points apiece: sophomore guard Kennedy Arison (Medina, Ohio, Akron Hoban), freshman guard Angelina Brush (Murrysville, Pa., Franklin Regional), freshman guard Maddie Syka (Darlington, Pa., Lincoln Park) and freshman forward Ella Kassan (Streetsboro, Ohio, Streetsboro).

Kaedlee Potter led Bethany with a career-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting. She added eight boards. Potter had 21 points in Bethany's Dec. 14 win. Bella Skobel finished with 14 points and four assists in 22 reserve minutes. Kate Botti posted an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, her second of the year.

Westminster went 5-of-14 from the floor--including making three of its five attempted three-pointers--in the opening quarter and after leading by as many as seven (9-2) went into the second up two, 13-11. Maryo had six on 2-of-4 shooting from three-point range. Bethany's 11-4 run to start the second led to a seven-point lead, 22-15, with just under six minutes to go in the half. Brush hit a pair of free throws with seconds left in the half to trim Westminster's deficit to four, 26-22, heading into the break.

Westminster shot 32.1 percent (18-56) from the floor and made eight of its 23 (.348) attempted three-pointers.

Bethany outscored Westminster 27-11 in the third, keyed by a 20-0 scoring run, capped by Botti's three-pointer with 2:25 remaining in the quarter. The Bison went into the fourth up 20, 53-33. Potter and Botti paced Bethany with eight and seven, respectively, in the third. Bethany maintained its 20-plus point lead throughout the final quarter.

Bethany's bench outscored the Westminster reserves 21-13. The Bison owned a 44-31 edge on the glass and had a 34-18 scoring advantage in the paint.
