Titans snag first PAC win of season

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College men's basketball program led wire-to-wire Wednesday night in its commanding 78-54 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over visiting Bethany College at Ron Galbreath Court inside Buzz Ridl Gymnasium.

Westminster upped its record to 4-10 overall and 1-8 in the PAC with the win. Bethany, losers of nine straight, fell to 5-9 overall and 0-9 in the conference. 

Junior guard Drew Weir (Salem, Ohio, Salem) led four Westminster players in double figures, finishing with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting. He added six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Junior guard Jaxon Hendershott (Salem, Ohio, West Branch) had 17 points and four rebounds while junior guard Mick Hergenrother (Canfield, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) posted a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, his second of the year. Sophomore guard Brady DePietro (Boardman, Ohio, Boardman) chipped in with 10 points and tied his career high with seven rebounds. Wednesday was his first start since Nov. 16 at Albion College. Sophomore guard Justin Wypasek (Strongsville, Ohio, Strongsville) finished with six points, four assists and a career-high nine boards. 

Cole Dailey paced Bethany with 15 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. He finished 4-of-8 from the floor and was 6-of-8 from the free throw line. 

Westminster's 12-point lead at the break (44-32) was its largest halftime lead this year. The Titans finished the first half shooting 45.2 percent (19-42) from the floor. Weir had 11 first half points on 5-of-8 shooting. 

A 10-0 start to the second stretched Westminster's lead to 22, 54-32. Weir scored the final eight points of the run. Another 6-0 run late in the half, capped by a Hergenrother layup, extended the Titans' second half lead to 30, 75-45. 

Westminster shot 42.9 percent (33-77) from the field and went 5-of-19 (.263) from three-point field goal range. Bethany shot just 31.5 percent (17-54) from the floor and was held to just 7-of-26 (.269) shooting from beyond the three-point line. The Bison entered Wednesday's game averaging a league-best 10.3 three-pointers per game. Westminster rolled up 30 points on 23 Bethany turnovers. Its 47 rebounds were a season high.
