Westminster dealt three-set losses by Carnegie Mellon, Scranton

PITTSBURGH--The Westminster College women's volleyball program was dealt a pair of three-set losses Saturday afternoon at Carnegie Mellon University's Quad in the new Highmark Center for Health, Wellness and Athletics, falling to Marietta College and the University of Scranton. 

After starting the season with four-straight victories, Westminster has now dropped three in a row. Marietta ran its season record to 5-0 with its win over the Titans while Scranton improved to 4-2. 

Marietta won 25-8, 25-22 and 25-17. Scranton posted set wins of 25-12, 25-19 and 26-24. 

Westminster will participate in the Allegheny College Invitational next Friday-Saturday, Sept. 13-14. The Titans open with Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Friday at 6 p.m. followed by the State University of New York at Fredonia at 8p.m. 

Marietta 3, Westminster 0
The Pioneers totaled 47 kills and hit .305 in the win. Down 1-0, Westminster rallied to even the second set at 16-16 and managed to pull to within one, 22-21, before suffering the three-point set loss. Junior outside hitter Rachel Brady (Columbus, Pa., Corry) had seven kills and 12 digs for the Titans. Junior middle hitter Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview) finished with six kills and three blocks. Freshman libero Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) totaled 14 digs while junior setter Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) had 11 assists and six digs. Jillian Fellers led Marietta with 12 kills and hit .385. Maggie Fellers added six kills and five digs. Emory Spitler finished with a 34-assist, 12-dig double-double. 

Scranton 3, Westminster 0
The Royals hit .302 in the victory and finished with a season-high 50 kills. Trailing 1-0 after the opening set, Westminster climbed out to a 6-2 lead in the second and trailed by just one, 16-17, before a five-point run by Scranton upped its lead to 22-16. Down 2-0, the Titans rattled off five-straight points early in the third set to go up six, 9-3. A four-point surge later in the set pushed Westminster's lead to seven, 14-7. Scranton, fueled by a five-point surge, pulled to with two, 16-14, and later, trailing 22-21, strung together three-straight points to reach match point at 24-22. Kills by sophomore right side Orlasia Hunter (Canton, Ohio, Saint Thomas Aquinas) and senior right side Ava Ferringer (Venus, Pa., Cranberry) evened the set at 24-24. Back-to-back kills by Deanna Whelpley and and Danielle Kramer secured the win for the Royals. Ferringer and Brady had six kills each for Westminster. Hunter and sophomore outside hitter Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) finished with five kills apiece. Freshman setter Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) had a career-high 13 assists and five digs while Gecina totaled 11 digs. Whelpley led Scranton with 14 kills and hit .345. She added eight digs. Sophia Hadjiyane finished with 12 kills and hit .450.
