Westminster goes 1-1 Saturday

ADA, Ohio--The Westminster College women's volleyball program went 1-1 Saturday at the 45th annual Ohio Northern University Invitational, earning a five-set win over Bluffton University before falling in three to Manchester University. 

Westminster is now 12-8 this season. Senior right side Ava Ferringer (Venus, Pa., Cranberry) and junior outside hitter Rachel Brady (Columbus, Pa., Corry) were named all-tournament.

Westminster will travel to the University of Mount Union next Saturday to take on the host Purple Raiders at 11 a.m. and Carlow University at 1 p.m. 

Westminster 3, Bluffton 2 (23-25, 25-18, 20-25, 26-24, 15-9)
The Titans battled back from a 2-1 deficit to win 26-24 in the fourth and 15-9 in the fifth. It was Westminster's first five-set win of the season.

Up 14-11 in the fourth set, a six-point Westminster run extended its lead to nine, 20-11. Ferringer had a pair of kills during the run. Bluffton scored four-straight points to pull to within five, 20-15, and eventually knotted things up at 23-23. Tied at 24, a kill by sophomore outside hitter Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) registered Westminster's 25th point and an attack error by the Beavers secured the 26th point, forcing a fifth set.

Brady, Rambo and senior right side Elise Jordan (Key Largo, Fla., Coral Shores) had two kills apiece in the fifth while Brady and freshman setter Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) each added a service ace. 

Five Westminster players finished with double-figure kills, led by Trent's 13-kill, eight-dig effort. Ferringer had 10 kills, six digs and three block assists while Brady finished with 10 kills, five assists, nine digs and three block assists. Rambo added 10 kills and two block assists while senior middle hitter Jamie Robertson (Los Angeles, Calif., Palisades Charter) hit .400 with 10 kills, five block assists and five digs. Jordan hit .438 with eight kills. Freshman Morgan O'Brien (Pittsburgh, Pa., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart) totaled 24 assists and nine digs while junior setter Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) posted a 19-assist, 12-dig double-double. Freshman libero Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) finished with 17 digs. 

Westminster hit .223 in the win. 

Manchester 3, Westminster 0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-16) 
Jordan hit .417 with six kills, five digs and a pair of block assists against the Spartans. Brady added six kills and five digs. Westminster hit just .112 against Manchester. Sophomore setter Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) and O'Brien had eight assists each. Gecina finished with eight digs while O'Brien and Trent had seven each.
