Titans start season with pair of straight-set wins

LATROBE, Pa.--The Westminster College women's volleyball registered 3-0 wins over Franciscan University and Hollins University Friday at Saint Vincent College's Bearcat Challenge.

Westminster won 25-17, 25-16, 25-14 against Franciscan and 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 against Hollins. 

Saturday, Westminster will take on Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) at 12 p.m. and Pitt-Greensburg at 4 p.m.

Junior outside hitter Rachel Brady (Columbus, Pa., Corry) led the Titans with eight kills while totaling seven digs. Senior right side Ava Ferringer (Venus, Pa., Cranberry) and sophomore outside hitter Liv Trent (Pittsburgh, Pa., Brentwood) had six kills apiece. Junior middle hitter Shelby Rambo (East Palestine, Ohio, Crestview) finished with five kills, five blocks and four digs. Junior setter Angie Nardone (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) and sophomore Anna-Kate Davis (Boonsboro, Md., Boonsboro) finished with 15 and 12 assists, respectively. Nardone added nine digs while Davis had six and four service aces. Freshman Brooke Gecina (Aurora, Ohio, Aurora) registered 17 digs in her debut. Trent added nine.

Mary Jean Cadman had seven kills for Franciscan. Mary Smart finished with 12 assists and Sara Moore had 16 digs. 

Westminster hit .280 as a team.

Rambo had 11 kills for the Titans in their three-set win over Hollins. Ferringer finished with nine kills while Brady had six. Nardone totaled 16 assists and seven digs while Davis finished with 12 assists and seven digs. Gecina registered 14 digs while Trent added a dozen. 

Sophia Maurer had a match-best 12-kill, 16-dig double-double for Hollins. Rachel Hull finished with 12 assists.
