Titans nab 2-0 elimination game win over Thiel

WASHINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College junior Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) delivered an impressive start in Thursday afternoon's 2-0 elimination game win over Thiel College. The right-hander allowed six hits and three walks while striking out three in the eight inning, 117-pitch effort.

The league's six-team, double-elimination championship is being held at Washington & Jefferson College's Ross Memorial Park in North Franklin Township, Pa. W&J is the tournament's No. 1 seed.

Westminster, the tournament's No. 5 seed, upped its record to 19-21. The No. 6 seed, Thiel concluded its season 15-24.

With its win, Westminster advances to Friday. The Titans will face the loser of Thursday night's matchup between No. 2 Grove City College and No. 4 Allegheny College at 11 a.m.

Gibbons evened his record at 4-4 this season. It was his second career elimination game win in the league's championship tournament. Gibbons went six innings and allowed two runs on three hits with five walks and seven strikeouts in an 8-2 victory over Saint Vincent College on May 13, 2022.

Senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) went 2-for-5 with a double. It was his 10th multi-hit game this season. Junior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) was 2-for-4 with a double and was hit by a pitch. Westminster broke through in the seventh with Campbell's ground-rule double. Senior third baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa., Greater Latrobe) led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Campbell's run-scoring, two-base hit. Junior left fielder Chris Davis (San Francisco, Calif., Stuart Hall) drove in Westminster's insurance run in the eighth with an RBI single through the left side of the infield. Sophomore Thomas Vo (Valparaiso, Ind., Valparaiso), pinch running for junior designated hitter David Kelly (Gibsonia, Pa., Eden Christian Academy), scored on Davis' base hit.

Sophomore lefty Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) retired the final three batters to earn his second save of the spring.

Colton Brightwell had two hits for Thiel.
