Westminster falls to No. 4 Trine

ANGOLA, Ind.--The Westminster College softball program was dealt a 9-0, five-inning run-rule loss by defending Division III champion and fourth-ranked Trine University Thursday afternoon at SportONE/Parkview Softball Field.

Trine, 40-3 this season and winners of 14-straight games, is making its 14th appearance in the Division III Championship. At 11 a.m. Friday the Thunder will face the University of Mount Union, 9-0 (5 inn.) winners over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Thursday's nightcap.

Westminster fell to 25-12 with the loss. This is the program's first-ever Division III Championship appearance. The Titans will take on UWSP Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the regional championship's first elimination game.

After registering a pair of runs in the second and three more in the third, Trine added four runs in the fourth inning to go up 9-0. 

Senior second baseman Liz Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) reached on an error with two outs in the fourth. She was Westminster's lone baserunner Thursday. 

Left-hander Debbie Hill improved to 13-1 in the circle with Thursday's victory. She struck out five in four scoreless innings. Hill and right-hander Lauren Clausen, who threw a scoreless fifth inning, combined for the no-hitter. 

Trine pounded out 11 hits in the five-inning win. First base Tyra Marcum had a two-out, two-run double in the the second and second base Macy Rocha delivered a two-out, two-run single in the third to close out the scoring. 

Graduate student left-hander Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) fell to 11-7 this season with the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout in two innings. Freshman righty Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) worked 1.1 scoreless relief innings, walking one and striking out one.
