Westminster concludes run at Division III Championship

Titans score first-ever Division III national tournament win

ANGOLA, Ind.--The Westminster College softball program went 1-1 in elimination games Friday at the NCAA Division III Regional Championship, which is being hosted by No. 4 Trine University. The Titans claimed a 2-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the program's first-ever Division III Championship win, before suffering a 7-2 loss to the University of Mount Union.

Trine, last year's Division III champion, is hosting the three-day, four-team regional at SportONE/Parkview Softball Field. The Thunder (41-3) will face Mount Union (34-9) Saturday at 11 a.m. for the regional title.

Westminster fell to 26-13 with the loss to Mount Union. This was the program's first-ever Division III Championship appearance.

Game 3: Westminster 2, Wisconsin-Stevens Point 1
Graduate student left-hander Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) was outstanding in the day's first elimination game, earning her seventh complete game victory this season. She allowed a run and scattered four hits while striking out a batter. Brown needed just 67 pitches to secure the win, her 12th of the year and 65th of her career.

Allie Meyers' two-out RBI double in the top of the fourth for the Pointers scored Rachel Baker, who singled and stole second prior to Meyers' two-base hit.

In the bottom of the fourth freshman shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) delivered a one-out base hit that drove in sophomore Kelly Troup (Mogadore, Ohio, Field), pinch running for senior second baseman Liz Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City), who led off with a single. Junior center fielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) tripled after the Karpa single, driving in the eventual game-winning run when junior Sam Holden (Youngstown, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney), who was inserted as a pinch runner for fifth-year first base Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa., Laurel), scored. Latess followed up Malczak's base hit with a single.

Latess went 2-for-3. Brown had a two-out double in the sixth. Lokay's fourth inning triple was the third of the season.

Ashley Zygowski took the loss in relief of starter Morgan Harwood. Harwood allowed two hits and struck out three in three innings. Zaygowski fell to 11-4 after giving up two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts in three innings.

Friday was UW-Stevens Point's first appearance in the Division III Championship since 2007. The Pointers concluded their season with a 32-9 record.

Game 4: Mount Union 7, Westminster 2
Up 1-0, the Purple Raiders plated three runs in the top of the fifth to go ahead 4-0. Emily Denney's two-run single keyed the three-run frame. With two outs in the fifth, Lokay smoked an RBI single to right that scored Latess, who had a one-out single earlier in the inning.

Following Denney's RBI base hit in the seventh, Kaitlyn Culver added a sacrifice fly and Sydney Mercer had a run-scoring single to push the Purple Raiders' lead to 7-1. Lokay's two-out, RBI double in the seventh scored sophomore Emma Redlinger (Pittsburgh, Pa., Upper St. Clair), who entered as a pinch hitter for freshman right fielder Cheyenne Burgos (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park). Redlinger reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a Karpa groundout.

Malczak got the start in the circle and allowed four runs (3 earned) on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout in five innings. She fell to 11-4 this season. Latess went 3-for-4 and scored a run. Lokay was 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and two RBIs. Malczak finished 2-for-4.

Chloe Bird improved to 13-2 in the circle with the elimination game win, allowing one run on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout in four innings. Denney finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Culver went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored, two stolen bases and a sacrifice fly.
