Westminster ends season in PAC semifinals

GROVE CITY, Pa.--The Westminster College men's lacrosse program wrapped up its 2024 season with a 17-6 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament semifinal loss to No. 1 seeded Grove City College Wednesday night at Robert E. Thorn Field. 

Grove City, winners of 11-straight games, improved to 14-4. The Wolverines will host No. 2 Allegheny College at 4 p.m. Saturday in the tournament's title game. The Gators scored a 16-12 semifinal win over Saint Vincent College Wednesday.

Westminster ended its season with an overall record of 10-8. 

Junior midfielder Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) finished with three goals while senior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y., Ithaca) had one goal, two assists and a ground ball. Waight finished his 56-game career with 187 points on 109 goals and 78 assists. He ranks No. 2 in all-time points, goals and assists in program history.

Junior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) finished with one goal, one assist and three ground balls. 

Senior faceoff Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) went 10-for-21 at the faceoff X and totaled eight ground balls and one caused turnover. Senior defender Aaron Alderette (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) had two ground balls and one caused turnover while sophomore short-stick defensive midfielder Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y., Huntington) finished with two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Senior goalkeeper Bradley Green (Landisville, Pa., Hempfield) totaled a career-high 20 saves. 

Zachary Hougan led Grove City with four goals, two assists and a ground ball. Colton Lehberg won 13-of-24 faceoffs and added one goal and eight ground balls. Danny Stone made 13 saves. 

Grove City took a 9-4 lead into halftime, registering six first quarter goals and three more in the second. Matt Blythe had three first half goals for the Wolverines. Clark scored twice for the Titans in the first quarter and scored back-to-back goals with Waight in the second. Freshman attack Nathan Covey (Sarver, Pa., Freeport) scored with under nine minutes to go in the third. Jones scored his only goal with under nine minutes to go in the fourth. 

Grove City outshot Westminster 58-41 and had a 37-19 advantage in shots on goal. Grove City went 21-of-23 on clears and Westminster went 15-of-20.
