Westminster earns league win at Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa.--Senior midfielder Nina Rascona (Somerset, Pa., Somerset), sophomore midfielder Emma Brazier (Northport, N.Y., Northport) and sophomore attack Haley Wenzel (Coppell, Texas, Coppell) each totaled seven points to help the Westminster College women's lacrosse program post a 20-6 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Saint Vincent College Tuesday afternoon at UPMC Field. 

Westminster improved to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in league play. Saint Vincent fell to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the PAC. 

Rascona had a goal and six assists and added a career-high 14 draw controls. The 14 draw controls put her over 100 for her career (111). Brazer scored six times, had one assist and added seven ground balls and three draw controls. Wenzel finished with a career-high five goals, two assists and five ground balls. Senior midfielder Samantha Reed (Zionsville, Pa., Emmaus) scored four goals and had one ground ball, one caused turnover and two draw controls. Freshman attack Falyn Snyder (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) scored a pair of goals and had one assist. She scored her first collegiate goal with 10 minutes left in the third quarter. Sophomore attack Emma Lafayette (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) scored one goal. 

Sophomore defender Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y., Sanford H. Calhoun) scored a goal and added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman attack Khloe Huba (Butler, Pa., Butler) and sophomore defender Morgan Reidy (Pine City, N.Y., Elmira) each had one assist and three ground balls. Reidy also had a caused turnover. 

Junior goalkeeper Jade Hromanik (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) totaled three saves and one ground ball in the win, her second-straight this season (2-2). 

Westminster came out firing, outscoring Saint Vincent 9-1 in the opening quarter. Wenzel had four goals and Brazier had three in the first 15 minutes. Westminster carried a 12-2 lead into halftime. Brazier and Snyder combined to score the first four goals of the second half and went into the fourth quarter leading 16-3. Reed, Cespedes and Brazier scored the final three goals of the game. 

Westminster outshot Saint Vincent 46-19 and had a 30-9 advantage in shots on goal. Westminster went 15-of-18 on clear attempts.

Westminster will travel to Greenville, Pa. Saturday to take on Thiel College. The opening draw from Alumni Stadium at Stoeber Field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
