Titans take two at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball program secured a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep Sunday afternoon at Thiel College, winning game one 11-5 before posting a 9-4 victory in game two at Tomcat Park. 

Westminster improved to 10-11 overall and 4-2 in the PAC with its two wins Sunday. Thiel fell to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in league action. 

Westminster hosts Waynesburg University Tuesday. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. 


Game 1: Westminster 11, Thiel 5
Senior right-hander Kolton Banfi (Harrisville, Pa., Franklin) evened his season record at 3-3 with the game one victory. He allowed three runs on 11 hits and struck out four over his eight innings. It was his second-straight start working eight innings. Banfi's 2.29 earned-run average (ERA) currently ranks third in the league. 

Junior catcher Chase Tomko (Hermitage, Pa., West Middlesex) went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore first baseman Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) was 2-for-4 with a walk, three RBIs and a run scored. Senior designated hitter Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y., Allendale Columbia) went 2-for-4 with two walks, two RBIs and a run scored. It was his seventh game this season with two hits. 

Westminster and Thiel had 13 hits apiece. The Titans had five players finish with two-hit games. Ethan Bintrim went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored for the Tomcats. 

Tied 3-all after six innings, Westminster scored six runs on six hits in the seventh. Reed and senior center fielder Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) each had two-run base hits in the inning. Dockum's two-out RBI single to right extended the Titans' lead to 9-3. 


Game 2: Westminster 9, Thiel 4
Junior lefty Jake Vitale (New Castle, Pa., Union) improved to 2-2 with his game two win. He allowed two runs (1 earned) on nine hits with a walk and seven strikeouts in seven innings. Senior left-hander Logan Exler (Pittsburgh, Pa., Serra Catholic) worked the final two innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout. 

Junior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a hit by pitch out of the leadoff spot. He had an RBI and scored twice. Randza went 2-for-4 with a walk while senior third baseman Donald Shimko (Greensburg, Pa., Greater Latrobe) was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Dockum was 1-for-3 with two sacrifice flies, two RBIs and a run scored. Randza and Dockum both own six-game hitting streaks. 

Colton Brightwell went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Thiel. 

Knotted at 1-1 after three innings, Westminster scored three in the fourth to snag a 4-1 lead. Shimko and Campbell followed Tomko's sacrifice fly with RBI singles in the inning. Leading 5-2, the Titans plated four more runs in the eighth. Dockum's sacrifice fly capped the scoring for Westminster.
