Titans secure Saturday sweep at Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program earned a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep at Geneva College's Bill and Rita Conrady Softball Field Saturday afternoon, claiming a 6-3 game one win and a 12-8 come-from-behind victory in the nightcap.

Westminster upped its overall record to 13-7 and improved to 6-2 in the league. Geneva fell to 7-11 overall and 1-3 in the PAC.

Game 1: Westminster 6, Geneva 3
Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) improved to 6-3 in the circle this season with the game one win. Brown, who has earned victories in six of her last seven outings, allowed three runs (2 earned) on four hits with two walks and a season-high nine strikeouts in six innings. Freshman Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) retired the final three batters to secure her first collegiate save.

After fifth-year first base Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa., Laurel) drew a one-out intentional walk in the seventh, Brown followed with a two-run single. Brown went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Latess walked three times in the win. Senior second base Liz Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Junior center fielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) led off the fifth inning with a double, her third of the year.

Justice Robbins went 2-for-3 Geneva. Her three-run double in the sixth cut Westminster's lead to a single run (4-3).

Game 2: Westminster 12, Geneva 8
Tied at 3-all after four innings, Westminster's three-run top of the fifth was answered by Geneva with a four-run bottom of the frame. Molly Shelley's two-out, three-run triple put the Golden Tornadoes ahead 7-6. Lokay tied the game at 7-all with a one-out RBI double in the sixth and freshman left fielder Faith Jones (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) delivered a run-scoring single that gave Westminster a one-run lead. Tied 8-8 after six innings, Westminster ripped off four runs in the top of the seventh to go up 12-8. Freshman shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) had an RBI single while Jones smacked an RBI double.

Davis worked 2.1 relief innings to earn her first collegiate victory. She allowed one run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Malczak started the nightcap and allowed three runs (1 earned) on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts in four innings.

Jones was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. It was the first three-hit game of her collegiate career. Junior catcher Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa., Dubois Central Catholic) finished 3-for-3 with two walks, a double, a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. It was he first home run since hitting a three-run shot in an 11-0 (5 inn.) win over Pitt-Bradford on March 21, 2023. Karpa was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
