Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Strong defense, second half scoring powers Titans in win

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College sophomore midfielder Emma Brazier (Northport, N.Y., Northport) matched her career high with seven goals in the women's lacrosse program's 20-10 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over visiting Franciscan University Wednesday evening at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Westminster snapped a four-game losing streak with Wednesday's win, improving to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the league. Franciscan fell to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference. 

Seven different players scored goals for Westminster Wednesday.

In addition to her seven goals, Brazier added two ground balls and was 1-for-1 on free position shots. Sophomore attack Emma Lafayette (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) fired in a career-high four goals while sophomore attack Haley Wenzel (Coppell, Texas, Coppell) had three goals, two assists and three ground balls. She was also 1-for-1 on free position shots. Senior midfielder Samantha Reed (Zionsville, Pa., Emmaus) chipped in with three goals, two ground balls, a caused turnover and two draw controls while senior midfielder Nina Rascona (Somerset, Pa., Somerset) had one goal, one assist, two caused turnovers and a career-high nine draw controls. Sophomore defender Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y., Sanford H. Calhoun) struck for her third goal of the season to go along with two ground balls, a caused turnover and a draw control while freshman attack Morgan Clark (Bridgeville, Pa., South Fayette) scored a goal. Freshman Falyn Snyder (Bel Air, Md., Bel Air) recorded her first career point, assisting on Lafayette's goal with just under 10 to play in the third quarter. 

Junior Jade Hromanik (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) finished with 14 saves and six ground balls. Wednesday was her second game this season with six ground balls. Sophomore defender Jaclyn Napier (Painesville, Ohio, Riverside) registered three caused turnovers. 

Joanna Hilkert led Franciscan with three goals. Carolyn Cooke and Theresa Lyle had two goals and an assist each. Lillian Vale finished with 11 saves. 

Westminster led 7-2 early into the second period. Reed scored back-to-back goals with 3:22 to play in the first and less that two minutes into the second. Hilkert and Lyle capped a 4-0 finish to the first half for Franciscan, with both scoring twice to cut Westminster's lead to two, 8-6, heading into halftime. Brazier scored three first half goals to pace the Titans. 

Westminster recorded the first six goals of the third with Lafayette and Brazier scoring three times each in the quarter. Leading 15-9 going into the fourth, the Titans fired in five-straight goals to start the fourth to extend their lead to 11, 20-9. Brazier's woman-down goal with under 13 minutes left, followed by Wenzel's back-to-back scores, led off the period. 

Saturday, Westminster will travel to Allegheny College. The opening draw from the Robertson Blue Turf in Meadville is scheduled for 4 p.m.
