Westminster nabs top seed in championship tournament

Titans split with Waynesburg to wrap up regular season

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.--The Westminster College softball program secured the No. 1 seed in next week's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament after splitting a pair of games with two-time defending league champion Waynesburg University Saturday afternoon. Westminster bounced back from a 3-2 nine-inning loss in game one to earn a 5-4 walkoff victory in game two.

This is the third-straight year Westminster will serve as host of the championship tournament. The Titans have been the championship tournament's host six times since 2007.

With Saturday's split in the regular season finale, Westminster improved to 22-10 overall and 15-5 in the league. The Titans have won six of their last seven. Waynesburg fell to 19-16 overall and 10-10 in the PAC.

The six-team PAC Championship Tournament is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m. Thursday in New Wilmington.

Game 1: Waynesburg 3, Westminster 2
Trailing 2-0 in the eighth, junior designated player Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa., Dubois Central Catholic) tied the game at 2-all with a two-out, two-run single to center. The base hit scored sophomore third base Ellie Hsieh (York, Pa., Central York) and junior center fielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin), who had singles earlier in the frame. Waynesburg's Emma Bliss delivered the eventual game-winning score after she led off the ninth with solo home run to right center.

Westminster managed just five hits in the game one setback. Hsieh went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) threw 111 pitches in the complete game loss, falling to 9-5 this spring. The left-hander allowed three runs on 10 hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

Game 2: Westminster 5, Waynesburg 4
After Brown's RBI single in the first staked the Titans to a 1-0 lead, Waynesburg went up 4-1 with a run in the second, two in the third and another in the fourth. A three-run sixth inning for Westminster tied the game at 4-all. Lokay's bases-loaded walk cut the lead to 4-2 before freshman Natalie Davis' (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) two-out, two-run base hit evened the game at 4-4. Davis entered the game in relief of senior starter Liz Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) in the top of the fourth.

Davis retired the Jellow Jackets in order in the top of the seventh. Hsieh led off the bottom of the frame with a single and advanced to second on Malczak's sacrifice. Freshman shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) delivered her second game-winning hit in Westminster's last three games with a one-out, run-scoring base hit to left that scored Hsieh.

Karpa went 2-for-3 with an RBI and was hit by a pitch in the fourth. She has eight multi-hit games this season and is hitting .354.

Davis gave up one run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts in four relief innings, pushing her season record to 3-0. Malczak came away with the no-decision after allowing three runs on seven hits with a strikeout in three innings.
