Westminster advances with win over Grove City in tournament opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College softball program, the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament's top seed, earned a 5-3 victory over No. 4 Grove City College Thursday afternoon.

This is the third-straight year Westminster has earned the top seed in the championship tournament. The Titans won their first and only PAC title in 2005.

Westminster upped its overall record to 23-10 with the win. The Titans will take on No. 6 Waynesburg University at 1 p.m. Friday, who held on for a 5-4 victory over No. 2 Allegheny College in Thursday's nightcap. The start time for Friday's opener was moved up one hour from 10 a.m. to 9 a.m. due to anticipated inclement weather in the Lawrence County area later in the day.

The Titans accumulated 11 hits in the win. Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) delivered a two-run single to left in the third inning to stretch the lead to 4-0. Fifth-year first base Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa., Laurel) drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to center in the first. Freshman shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) smoked a two-out, RBI single to right a batter later to push Westminster's lead to 2-0.

Leading 5-1 after four, junior Sam Holden (Youngstown, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney), inserted as a pinch runner for Brown after her one-out single, scored on a muffed throw later in the inning.

Grove City scratched out two runs on a pair of RBI singles from Abigail Meadows in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.

Brown went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. She also earned the victory in the circle, improving to 10-5 this spring, after allowing two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks in 5.1 innings. Freshman Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) recorded her third save of the season, giving up one run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Junior designated player Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa., Dubois Central Catholic) was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore third base Ellie Hsieh (York, Pa., Central York) went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored while Karpa finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Latess smacked her 14th double of the season in the third. Junior center fielder Sydney Lokay's (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) two-out base hit in the third extended her streak of reaching base safely to 10 games.

Brooke Brodie fell to 6-6 with the loss, allowing five runs (2 earned) on 11 hits with one strikeout and no walks in 5.1 innings. Evelyn Montone finished 4-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. Lauren Harris went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
