Titans suffer pair of setbacks at league-leading W&J

Randza drills four doubles in doubleheader

WASHINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball team was dealt a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) losses at league-leading Washington & Jefferson College Tuesday, falling in game one 4-3 before dropping a 8-5 decision in game two.

W&J ran its season record to 21-9 overall and 13-1 in the PAC. Westminster fell to 15-18 overall and 9-7 in the league.

The Titans step out of league play Wednesday when they travel Fredonia State. The single, nine-inning game is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Game 1: W&J 4, Westminster 3
Freshman pinch hitter Parker Lyons (Rochester, Pa., Rochester) tied game one at 3-all in the sixth, driving in senior first baseman Jake Dockum (Fairport, N.Y., Allendale Columbia) with his fielder's choice. Dockum led off the inning with a single. Nolan Lutz plated the eventual game-winning run for W&J with his base hit in the seventh. It was the third-straight two-out single in the inning, following Jacob LaDuca and Drew Garth

Senior center fielder Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored. Junior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler) went 2-for-5. Junior left fielder Chris Davis (San Francisco, Calif., Stuart Hall) had an RBI base hit in the second.

Sophomore left-handed starter Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) fell to 0-2 this season, giving up four runs (3 earned) on nine hits with a walks and four strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Freshman right-hander Jon Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) allowed two hits and struck out one in 1.1 scoreless relief innings.

Lutz went 3-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and two RBIs. Anthony Pass improved to 6-1 with the victory, allowing three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks in 7.2 innings. Ethan Boring struck out one in 1.1 scoreless innings to secure his third save of the season.

Game 2: W&J 8, Westminster 5
Trailing 7-2, Westminster rallied with a three-run seventh to cut the Presidents' lead to two runs. Back-to-back base hits by freshman catcher Braden Zeigler (New Castle, Pa., Shenango) and Campbell to lead off the inning chased W&J starter Thomas McLaren, with Zeigler scoring on Campbell's single before Randza delivered with an RBI double. He later scored on a fielding error.

Campbell finished 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Dockum finished 2-for-3 with a walk, a hit by pitch and an RBI. Davis' second inning single extended his current hitting streak to 13 games. He also drove in a run and stole a base.

Junior righty Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) took the loss, falling to 2-3 this season. He yielded six runs (5 earned) on nine hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
