Westminster falls to W&J in weather-shortened fray

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College women's lacrosse program suffered a 16-6 loss to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson College Wednesday afternoon at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

W&J, winners of seven straight, improved to 7-6 overall and 6-0 in the league. Westminster fell to 3-9 overall and 2-4 in the PAC.

After the third quarter, the game was called due to lingering inclement weather in the Lawrence County area.

Senior midfielder Nina Rascona (Somerset, Pa., Somerset) led Westminster with two goals and an assist and added three draw controls and a caused turnover while senior midfielder Samantha Reed (Zionsville, Pa., Emmaus) had two assists, two ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover. Sophomore midfielder Emma Brazier (Northport, N.Y., Northport), sophomore defender Isabella Cespedes (Merrick, N.Y., Sanford H. Calhoun), sophomore attack Haley Wenzel (Coppell, Texas, Coppell) and freshman attack Khloe Huba (Butler, Pa., Butler) each had a goal. Freshman attack Morgan Reidy (Pine City, N.Y., Elmira) had two caused turnovers and a ground ball. 

Junior Jade Hromanik (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shaler) made 13 saves and had two ground balls in three quarters. 

Ann Kloehn had three goals and a pair of ground balls for W&J. Aisa Uhler finished with two goals and an assist. 

W&J jumped out to a 9-1 first quarter lead. Emily Heck, Caleigh Bogats and Mya Bolinda all had two first quarter goals. Ella Holland, Kloehn and Brynne Stewart scored the final three goals of the second quarter to give the Presidents a 13-4 lead heading into halftime.

Rascona scored less than a minute into the third quarter, trimming W&J's lead to 13-5. Kloehn's woman-up goal, followed by Stewart's second score of the day, upped the Presidents lead to 15-5. Cespedes netted her fifth goal of the year with four minutes remaining in the quarter. Kloehn closed out the scoring with just over three minutes left in the third.

W&J outshot Westminster 31-14 and had a 29-9 edge in shots on goal. 

Westminster will celebrate its Senior Recognition Day Saturday against Bethany College. The opening draw is scheduled for 12 p.m.
