Waight, Jones set single-season records in win over W&J

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--Westminster College senior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y., Ithaca) set the program's single-season record while junior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) established a new single-season points record in Wednesday night's 20-12 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory over Washington & Jefferson College at the UPMC Sports Complex.

Westminster improved to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the PAC. W&J fell to 3-9 overall and 2-4 in league play. The start of the game was delayed over an hour due to lingering inclement weather in the Lawrence County area.

Jones totaled seven points on five goals and a pair of assists, giving him 66 points (49G, 17A) this season. Nick Huebner finished with 65 points (56G, 9A) in 2023. Jones added six ground balls. Waight led the Titans with nine points, scoring three goals and posting a career-high six assists. Waight added three ground balls. He currently has 29 assists this season, surpassing Boyd Foster's 27, set during the 2023 season. Waight's nine points also moved him into No. 2 among the program's all-time points leaders with 172, passing Ryan Shorts (169, 2016-19).

Senior midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) and junior midfielder Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) finished with four points apiece. Clark had three goals and an assist and added three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sentz totaled two goals and two assists. Senior defender Aaron Alderette (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) chipped in with three caused turnovers and a ground ball while junior defender David Evangelista (Pittsburgh, Pa., Chartiers Valley) had three ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior long-stick midfielder Ryan Romero (Port Matilda, Pa., State College) added two caused turnovers and a ground ball.

Seniors Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) and Dino Mario D'Alesio II (Youngstown, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) combined to go 21-of-30 at the faceoff dot. O'Malley won 14 and added 11 ground balls while D'Alesio II won seven and finished with four ground balls. Freshman Demetrio Perez (Coral Gables, Fla., Christopher Columbus) earned the win in his first career start. He had three first half saves. Sophomore Brendan Siwik (Aldie, Va., John Champe) made seven saves in the second half. 

Carter Watts led W&J with seven points on three goals and four assists. Ronin Keane went 13-of-32 on faceoffs and had five ground balls. Aiden Herman had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. 

Westminster led 12-4 at the half. Clark had three first half goals while Waight scored twice and have five assists in the first half. W&J's Riley Bullock and Aiden Herman scored back-to-back goals to open the third quarter and trim Westminster's lead to six, 12-6. Four different players scored for the Titans in the five-goal quarter. With Westminster up 19-8, Herman, Dylan Batche and Watts scored consecutive goals to pull to within eight, 19-11, with just over six minutes left in regulation.

Westminster outshot W&J 50-38 and finished with a 34-22 advantage in shots on goal. The Titans were successful on 22 of their 235 clear attempts. 

Saturday, Westminster will celebrate its Senior Recognition Day against Bethany College. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
