Westminster edged at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio--The Westminster College baseball team dropped a 5-3 road verdict to the University of Mount Union Sunday afternoon at Rafeld-Rogers Field.

Westminster fell to 11-16 this season. Sunday was the Titans' sixth game in the last six days. Mount Union, now 9-0 at home this season, improved to 20-8. The Purple Raiders were among others receiving votes in last week's D3baseball.com Top 25.

Eric Schilling's one-out solo home run in the second staked Mount Union to a 1-0 lead.

Freshman left fielder Quinn Marquis (Hinckley, Ohio, Highland) delivered a two-out, RBI triple in the fourth that tied the game. Freshman catcher Braden Zeigler (New Castle, Pa., Shenango) belted a home run to start the fifth and junior right fielder Chris Davis (San Francisco, Calif., Stuart Hall) scored on a throwing error after a base hit earlier in the inning. The home run was the first of Zeigler's collegiate career.

Trailing 3-1, Mount Union tagged junior right-hander Dwight Parker (Youngstown, Ohio, Liberty) for three runs in the seventh, highlighted by Zack Mazza's two-out, two-run home run. Schilling scored on Joe Lenart's sacrifice fly in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Sophomore left-hander Josh Reed (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) was terrific through the first four innings, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Parker fell to 0-2 with the loss. He allowed three runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts in three relief innings.

Senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Davis is riding a seven-game hitting streak after his fifth inning single. Senior center fielder Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) was hit by a pair of pitches Sunday and has reached base safely in 11-straight games.

Westminster hosts Franciscan University Wednesday. The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
