Westminster wins twice against Franciscan

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The Westminster College baseball program earned a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep over visiting Franciscan University Thursday afternoon, posting a 5-1 game one victory before cruising to a 15-5 (8 inn.) game two win.

Westminster upped it season record to 13-16 overall and 7-5 in the PAC. Franciscan fell to 4-20 overall and 1-13 in the league.

Saturday Westminster is scheduled to travel to Geneva College. The first pitch of the conference doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at 33rd Street Field in Beaver Falls.

Game 1: Westminster 5, Franciscan 1
Junior righty Ryan Gibbons (Ellwood City, Pa., Lincoln) fired his first complete game in close to two years in Thursday's game one win. He allowed one run on five hits with a walk and fanned a career-high 11 batters. Gibbons went nine innings in Westminster's 14-3 win over Geneva on April 23, 2022, allowing three runs (0 earned) on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts. He is 2-2 this season.

Gibbons retired eight-straight batters after Franciscan's Dylan Robb drew a two-out walk in the second. Robb drilled a one-out single in the fifth but was erased one batter later when Devon Ashcraft grounded into a double play. Wade Stoehr's two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth scored David Ferroni, who led off the frame with a single.

Junior left fielder Chris Davis (San Francisco, Calif., Stuart Hall) went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. He had a two-run double in the sixth after driving in a run on a fielder's choice in the fourth. Freshman catcher Braden Zeigler (New Castle, Pa., Shenango) had a run-scoring single in the fourth. He also walked and scored a run. Junior shortstop Braeden Campbell (Glenshaw, Pa., Shaler), making his first start in close to two weeks, doubled in the first. He also walked in the third.

Game 2: Westminster 15, Franciscan 5 (8 inn.)
After going down 2-0 early, Westminster used a five-run fifth to grab an 8-4 lead. The Titans batted around in the inning. Senior second baseman Logan Murgenovich (Aliquippa, Pa., Central Valley) delivered an RBI double to kick start the scoring. Murgenovich led off the sixth with a home run off of the left field foul pole. It was his first home run in one calendar year, when he hit a leadoff home run in the fourth inning of an 18-0 (8 inn.) win at Franciscan on April 18, 2023. Fifth-year right fielder Carter Chinn (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) smacked a two-run double in the seventh. Campbell's one-out RBI single scored Ziegler, who singled earlier in the inning, to close out the scoring.

Freshman right-hander Jon Albers (Corry, Pa., Corry) gave up one run on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 5.2 relief innings. He improved to 2-0 this year. Starter Logan Exler (Pittsburgh, Pa., Serra Catholic) went 2.1 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. The Titans pounded out 16 hits in game two. Senior center fielder Matthew Randza (Beaver Falls, Pa., Blackhawk) went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and three runs scored. It was his seventh multi-hit game this season. Chinn went 2-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored while Murgenovich was 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored.
