Westminster rallies in game two to earn split

LATROBE, Pa.--The Westminster College softball team was dealt a 7-0 game one loss by Saint Vincent College Saturday, but responded with a convincing 10-2 (5 inn.) game two victory to earn a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) split.

Saturday's games were held at Greater Latrobe High School's Graham-Sobota Field.

Westminster, now 17-9 overall, improved to 10-4 in conference play. Saint Vincent's record stands at 15-9 overall and 7-3 in the PAC.

The Titans are scheduled to travel to Greenville, Pa. on Saturday, April 20. The first pitch of the league doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.

Game 1: Saint Vincent 7, Westminster 0
Westminster managed just five base hits in the game one setback. The Titans were also tagged with five errors. Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) was saddled with the loss and fell to 7-4 in the circle this season, allowing six runs (1 earned) on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout in four innings.

Haley Bicko improved to 5-1 with the five-hit shutout. She struck out five and did not walk a batter. Bicko also had a two-run double in Saint Vincent's three-run first inning. Shayna Perigo went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Kendall McConnell had an inside-the-park home run in the second.

Game 2: Westminster 10, Saint Vincent 2 (5 inn.)
Senior Liz Malczak (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) upped her record to 8-3 with the game two win. She gave up two runs (0 earned) on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts in the complete-game effort. Malczak also had an RBI triple in the first and a run-scoring base hit in the fourth. Junior third base Mia Meholick (Dubois, Pa., Dubois Central Catholic) went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) was 3-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. It was her first three-hit game and first three-bagger of her collegiate career. Karpa has a hit in four-straight games.

Trailing 6-0, the Bearcats scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth. Sophomore second base Ellie Hsieh's (York, Pa., Central York) RBI single in the bottom of the inning, followed by Meholick's two-run triple and freshman catcher Faith Jones' (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) sacrifice fly, capped Westminster's four-run fifth.

Olivia Bushore suffered the loss for Saint Vincent, allowing two runs on five hits in an inning.
