Westminster earns sweep at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa.--The Westminster College softball team secured a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) sweep at Thiel College Saturday afternoon, rolling to an 8-0 run-rule victory in game one before taking game two 8-3.

Westminster, winners of nine of its last 11, improved to 19-9 overall and 12-4 in the PAC. The Titans have now won 10-straight games against the Tomcats. Thiel fell to 10-22 overall and 5-11 in the PAC. 

Wednesday, Westminster hosts Chatham University. The first pitch of the scheduled doubleheader is set for 3:30 pm. 


Game 1: Westminster 8, Thiel 0 (5 inn.)
The game one win was Westminster's fourth run-rule victory this season. Graduate student Madison Brown (Lisbon, Ohio, East Liverpool) improved to 8-4 in the circle with the complete game shutout, allowing just a pair of base hits in five innings of work. She fanned four and did not walk a batter. Fifth-year first base Mackenzie Latess (New Castle, Pa., Laurel) had her third three-hit game of the spring, finishing 3-for-3 with a a double, a stolen base, two RBIs and two runs scored while junior center fielder Sydney Lokay (North Huntington, Pa., Norwin) was 2-for-3 with an RBI. 

Westminster jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead. A two-run two-bagger by freshman shortstop Ava Karpa (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) came between senior second base Liz Malczak's (Grove City, Pa., Grove City) run-scoring double and Lokay's RBI single. Brown smashed a two-run home run down the right field line in the third, her first since April 27, 2019.


Game 2: Westminster 8, Thiel 3
Westminster scratched out a pair of second inning runs on Lokay's RBI triple and freshman left fielder Faith Jones' (Volant, Pa., Wilmington) RBI double. Senior catcher Alyssa Stock (New Brighton, Pa., New Brighton) delivered a two-run single in the fifth to push the lead to 4-1 before Jones' two-run triple extended the lead to 6-1 later in the inning. Lokay added another run-scoring triple in the seventh. She finished 3-for-3 with two triples, two RBIs and three runs scored. Jones went 2-for-2 with a walk, a sacrifice bunt, a double, a triple and three RBIs. Freshman shortstop Ava Karpa's (Coraopolis, Pa., Moon) base hit in the second extended her hitting streak to a season-best six games. 

Malczak went four innings and improved to 9-3 this season with the win. She allowed one run on six hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks. Freshman Natalie Davis (Youngstown, Ohio, Boardman) gave up two runs on three hits in three innings, earning her second save of the year.
