Fourth quarter surge pushes Brockport past Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--The State University of New York (SUNY) Brockport men's lacrosse squad outscored Westminster College 10-1 in the final quarter to secure a 20-8 non-conference win Saturday afternoon at the UPMC Sports Complex. 

Brockport is now 1-3. Westminster fell to 2-3. 

Sophomore attack Kyler Nigliazzo (Montgomery, Texas, Magnolia West) had the first multi-goal game of his career. He scored twice. Senior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y., Ithaca), senior midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) and junior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) each had a goal and an assist. Senior midfielder Kellen Frazer (Eugene, Ore., Oak Hill), junior midfielder Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill) and freshman midfielder Grady Tierney (Clear Lake Shores, Texas, Houston Christian) scored goals. It was Tierney's first career goal. 

Senior faceoff Colin O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa., North Allegheny) was 7-of-18 at the X and added four ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior faceoff Dino Mario D'Alesio II (Youngstown, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) went 5-of-14 at the X and had three ground balls. Junior defender David Evangelista (Pittsburgh, Pa., Chartiers Valley) and sophomore short-stick defensive midfielder Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y., Huntington) caused two turnovers each. Sophomore Jorden Tate (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) made five saves and had three ground balls and a caused turnover.

Nick Askin led the Golden Eagles with 10 goals. Marc Zappula finished with two goals and three assists. Andrew DiPalma went 16-of-23 at the faceoff X  and added 10 ground balls. Patrick Erway and Tim Hubbard both caused a pair of turnovers. Jack Acker made 19 saves and had two ground balls and a caused turnover.

Early goals by Nigliazzo and Waight gave Westminster a 2-0 lead just over five minutes into the first. Tied 2-2 after one, Brockport ripped off five-straight goals in the second and went into halftime sporting a 7-2 lead. Askin scored four of his 10 goals in the second quarter. Early second half goals by Askin and Mike O'Brien stretched the Golden Eagles' lead to 9-2 close to seven minutes into the third. The Titans scored five of the next six, capped by Frazer's man-up goal with under three minutes left, to trim Brockport's lead to three, 10-7, heading into the fourth quarter.  

Brockport found the back of the net for 10-straight goals in the fourth. Askin scored four times, including the first three, during the scoring surge. Sentz's goal with 14 seconds left in regulation closed out the scoring. 

Brockport outshot Westminster 41-37 while Westminster had a 27-25 edge in shots on goal. Brockport was 18-of-22 on clear attempts. Westminster finished 18-of-22. Brockport also finished with a 36-27 advantage in ground balls. 

Westminster will travel to Alliance, Ohio on Wednesday to take on the University of Mount Union. The opening faceoff at Kehres Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
