Westminster earns road victory at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio--Seven different players scored goals for the Westminster College men's lacrosse team in a 13-10 victory over the University of Mount Union Wednesday night at Kehres Stadium. 

Westminster improved to 3-2 this season with the win. Mount Union fell to 4-3. 

Junior midfielder Gavin Jones (Henrico, Va., Douglas S. Freeman) fired in five goals and added an assist. It was his second five-goal game of the season (5, at Penn College, Feb. 21). Senior midfielder Jimmy Sentz (Catonsville, Md., Loyola Blakefield) and senior attack Payton Waight (Ithaca, N.Y., Ithaca) each had two goals and an assist. Sentz added a season-high five ground balls. Sophomore attack Brady Page (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) registered one goal and one assist while junior midfielder Jonas Clark (Montgomery Village, Md., Watkins Mill), sophomore short stick defensive midfielder Jahiem Hawkins (Huntington Station, N.Y., Huntington) and sophomore attack Kyler Nigliazzo (Montgomery, Texas, Magnolia West) all had goals. 

Senior faceoff Dino Mario D'Alesio II (Youngstown, Ohio, Cardinal Mooney) went 8-of-25 at the X and added three ground balls. Junior long stick midfielder Brody McGuinness (Heber City, Utah, Wasatch) tied his season high with six ground balls and a caused turnover while junior defender David Evangelista (Pittsburgh, Pa., Chartiers Valley) matched season highs in ground balls (5) and caused turnovers (3). Senior defender Aaron Alderette (Bethel Park, Pa., Bethel Park) totaled three caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls. Sophomore Jorden Tate (Cranberry Township, Pa., Seneca Valley) ran his record to 2-1 win the 13-save effort. 

Spencer Logsdon had three goals for Mount Union. Braylon Li added two goals and an assist. Stephen Moschetta made 11 saves in the loss. 

Five different players had goals in a flurry of early first quarter scoring for Westminster. Hawkins' goal, the opening score of the game, was his first since April 15, 2023 against Thiel College. After Mount Union rallied with the final three goals of the quarter to cut Westminster's lead to one, 5-4, heading into the second, Waight and Jones scored back-to-back goals in the first four-plus minutes to push the Titans' lead to 7-4. Logston's goal with just over a minute to go in the half trimmed Westminster's lead to three, 9-6, going into halftime. 

Both teams scored four goals in the second half. Sly Sundown and Jones traded goals in the third. Up 11-9 midway through the fourth Jones and Clark registered unassisted goals that stretched the lead to four, 13-9. Li's man-up goal with under 30 seconds left closed out the scoring. 

Mount Union outshot Westminster 41-33 while the Titans finished with 24 shots on goal to the Purple Raiders' 23. Westminster was 21-of-29 on clear attempts and forced Mount Union into 27 turnovers. 

Westminster will travel to Arlington, Va. to take on Marymount University Saturday afternoon. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Long Bridge Park. Westminster claimed a 19-13 win over the Saints last March in New Wilmington.
